Sony Readers to kill the Kindle?
Can Sony's latest crop of e-readers kill the Kindle?
Paper’s soooooooo last century dahling. You want to get yourself an e-reader. Luckily, Sony’s just gone official with two new e-readers to take on the Kindle (if and when it gets released over here): the PRS-300 and PRS-600.
First up the Sony PRS-600, aka the Touch, has a six-inch resistive touchscreen for you to get handsy with. It has Memory Stick Duo and SD card slots too for extra storage. Available in black, red and silver it supports a wide array of formats, measures 175×121x10mm and weighs 286g, so it’ll slip in your manbag no probs.
The Sony PRS-300, meanwhile is a more discreet offering, with a five-inch screen. Dubbed the Pocket, it weighs 220g and measures up at 157×107x5mm. Thinner than that, you just don’t get! There’s no touchscreen here, though.
Both models have USB 2.0, 512MB internal memory, but no Wi-Fi (although Sony has said a Wi-Fi version is on its way). There’s also Mac compatibility for Apple heads.
Price-wise the Sony PRS-300 will set you back around $199 (or £120) and the Sony PRS-60 will cost $299 (or £180 in Sterling) when they’re released later this year. Watch out Kindle!

Hoping the Wi-Fi version comes soon. As long as Sony can't delete books off it like Amazon can do with the Kindle.

E-readers will never replace books until the technology can offer the flexibility of paper and the readers themselves drop dramatically in price. I'm not going to pay £300 for something that is barely legible. And when you consider that an e-book costs more or less the same as a printed copy then you can see why this technology, which has been around for many years, has gone nowhere.
