Sony PSP e1000 targets younger users. Really young users!

In contrast to the host of recent feature-packed games consoles, Sony took the confusing decision to strip it’s latest PSP of some rather key features – such as Wi-Fi. The Japanese company now claims that it’s a bid to attract younger users, but will it work?

The original Sony PSP has been around for quite a few years now, and with the introduction of updated models like the PSP Go, you can get the more traditional PSP 3000 for a relatively affordable amount. Despite this, Sony has decided to strip out the model even more, with the the introduction of the Wi-Fi-less Sony PSP e1000.

When it was announced, lots of you guys questioned who exactly the PSP e1000 was aimed at, and now Sony has the answer. Younger users, apparently, with Sony UK Product Manager Claire Blackhouse pointing out that the “PSP is going for a younger market”.

Sounds sensible, until you realise just how young Sony is aiming: “The summer’s game releases, such as Harry Potter and Petz, as well as the launch of the new colours. are certainly appealing to an 8-15-year-old audience.”

It’s a good job for parents that they did leave out Wi-Fi, then, as we can’t imagine many eight year olds having the cash to buy the PSP e1000 – even if it is relatively cheap!

For a sub £100 handheld it's not bad. But with the lack of networking and the lack of physical games for the psp's umd format coming in the future in light of the stupidly named PS Vita (it's still a psp 2 to me) as sony is once again changing the format away from umd, i think that people should steer clear from this. I've had the psp and still have one since the release version. I refused to upgrade to the slim and as psp's are being traded in for the the stupid baby ds & 3ds i think anyone wanting a cheap psp should get one second hand or a refurb from a gaming store. You get the one years warranty same as sony warranty only difference is its cheaper than the e1000 and its been used but has all the features you need in a console. Save your pennies kids and wait for the PS Vita.

You'd be amazed how much money 8 year olds seem to have. Who is the ds aimed at? I know many children my sons age (5) who already have a ds, so is Sony being that silly, or actually tapping into quite a large potential market?

I gave my kids the choice of the ps and the psp or xbox 360 and ds... I was supprised when they picked the xbox and ds... Now that I've seen the the ds i was supprised at how well geared they were to kids... Now 3ds is gearing for older players and psp are aiming for younger players .. Are the scared to compete lol

If Sony lines up all the LEGO Harry Potter, Star Wars and all the Hannah Montana, Petz and other kid-friendly titles at about £8 each, then it could be onto a winner, but it was obvious from the outset that this was a kid's toy version of the PSP (http://psp2roundup.blogspot.com/2011/08/thoughts-on-sony-e1000-psp.html)

Sony is a few years late to the party, Nintendo already has a graplehold on the younger generation of gamers and changing that is going to take a lot of effort....perhaps more than its worth. The E1000 is a better idea for those like me, i rarely use the online functions of my PSP and those who use custom firmwares would agree its a great piece of kit with or without the WiFi. The PSP is far superior to the DS and still capable of making the 3DS look a bit weak on the functionality side. overall the E1000 is perfect of you want to upgrade your current handheld and dont want or need WiFi or to fight with download only services like the PSP Go, one thing for Sony to consider though is to improve the battery life to give you the ability to game on full brightness and volume for longer than 3 hours otherwise you best invest in a car charge adapter if you want use it on long journeys, its a problem that seems apparent on the PSP 1000, 2000 and 3000..
