Sony NEX-C3 compact system camera: A small camera with big ambitions

Sony’s NEX range revolutionised the compact system camera market, showing just how small these changeable lens, mirror-less cameras can be. The company has gone one better with the Sony NEX-C3, with the latest addition once again taking the title of smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera.

The thing we love the most about cameras like the new Sony NEX-C3 is the fact that it hides a full sized APS-C sensor within its tiny body. You can change lenses to suit your subject matter – just like a digital SLR – but the lack of internal mirrors allows the Sony NEX-C3 to be considerably smaller and lighter.

The body of the Sony NEX-C3 weighs in at just 225g, yet Sony has still managed to fit a DSLR-rivalling 16.2-megapixel APS HD CMOS sensor within the attractive and slimline casing. That should help it to perform as well as it looks.

Other features on the Sony NEX-C3 include a tilting 3-inch LCD screen, and there are a host of multi-frame photo options available, including a ‘3D Sweep Panorama’ function that lets you take ultra wide 3D photos to show off on your 3DTV.

Available from August, prices have yet to be announced.

Steve

I have a Sony Alpha which is prone to collecting lens dust which spoil my images. Will this also be susceptible to dust?

I bought the Nex5 micro four thirds camera and it's awesome. Could do with some more lens choices though.

That said, I'm more interested on the upcoming NEX-7 and Zeiss 24mm. The 16mm is a nice pancake, but a bit wide for my purpose. The Zeiss (36mm equiv.) would be perfect and will be more suitable on a more serious body like the NEX-7. If it has an EVF, even a detachable one, that would make me migrate from the m43 camp and to Sony's APS-C mirrorless. Good thing I have a few vintage lenses that I can still use, just need new adapters. http://www.iphonefamily.net
