Sony launches HD 3D binoculars, perfect for bird watchers of all kinds...

With cameras getting longer and longer zooms, it’s rare that people are spotted with binoculars these days – even train spotters tend to opt for more subtle options these days. Sony hopes its latest DEV-3 and DEV-5 creations will tempt those wanting to get up close to the action and, just like the latest digital cameras you’ll also be able to take snaps or record in HD 3D video.

Bird watching, train spotting and less savoury activities all go hand in hand with a decent pair of binoculars, but most of the time you’ll be left wishing you could have also recorded that lesser spotted tit…

If you’ve got the money – a whopping $1,399 and $1,999, respectively – you’ll be able to do just that with serious-looking Sony DEV-3 and DEV-5. These digital binoculars offer dual f/1.8-3.4 lenses, boasting a 10x optical zoom, and there are also two CMOS sensors in place for 3D capture.

You’ll have to put up with digital viewfinders – with a 1,227-dot resolution in place – which won’t please traditionalists, but the ability to capture everything you see should more than make up for the lack of optical viewfinders. The DEV-5 adds GPS, a case and a 10x digital zoom to the mix, but it seems like a pretty steep price hike to us.

Would you consider the DEV-3 or DEV-5 binoculars? Or do you think your camera would do a better job? Leave a comment and let us know.
