Skype video-calling arrives on the iPhone
Finally FaceTime has some serious competition
Voice over internet service Skype has updated its free iPhone app to support video calling for the first time.
The update, which lands a week earlier than expected, allows iPhones to make free Skype-to-Skype video calls over 3G or Wi-Fi to other mobile, Mac or PC users, a formula that’s sure to provide some serious competition to Apple’s own FaceTime.
Video calling on the iPhone has only taken off with the latest iPhone 4 – the first to feature a forward-facing camera. However, the app is technically compatible with other Apple devices too: in the case of the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch, you’ll have to use the rear-facing camera and have the screen facing away from you, so you’ll effectively only be able to send video.
On the iPad, meanwhile, the lack of an on-board camera altogether means you’ll be able to send but not receive.
The Skype for iPhone app is available as a free download from the Apple App Store.
