Sky trialling 3D footy broadcast this weekend

Sky Sports is bringing this weekend’s Premier League battle between Arsenal and Manchester United in 3D to lucky punters in nine mystery pub venues across the UK and Ireland.
The unnamed venues are being fitted with prototype 3D screens ahead of Sunday’s showdown, and pub-goers will be given a special pair of 3D glasses, as the broadcaster trials its 3D system ahead of a wider roll-out in the months to come.
On top of the usual armada of cameras hugging the touchline at the Emirates Stadium will be eight dedicated 3D rigs featuring two cameras apiece, with the match going out in both 2D and 3D on the day.
Assuming all goes to plan, Sky is planning a wider launch to hundreds more pubs in April, with one Premier League game a week getting some 3D camera love.
The matches will also be broadcast on Sky’s forthcoming 3D channel, which will be free to Sky+HD subscribers on the premium tariff and won’t require a set-top box upgrade.
You will, of course, need to buy a new 3D-capable telly, and despite having dominated this year’s CES, we won’t be seeing any 3D sets before mid-year, with Sky planning to hold back the 3D channel until then.
