Sky launches 1TB Sky+HD box
Sky+HD back in black
Fresh from announcing its 3D plans for the year yesterday, Sky has followed up by launching a 1TB version of its Sky+HD box.
Dressed all in black, the new box is part of Sky’s plans to phase out its old-school vanilla Sky+ boxes and replace them with HD-capable ones.
The 1TB Sky+HD box gives you four times the storage space of the original Sky+HD box, enough for a whopping 240 hours of high-def TV, which should prove sufficient for even the most dedicated of couch potatoes.
“We want to offer people as much choice as possible,” said Sky’s Hilary Perchard. “Whether customers take a Sky+HD box or the new Sky+HD 1TB box, they’re guaranteed a premium viewing experience that is future-proofed for Sky’s 3D and video-on-demand services, due to arrive later this year.”
As with Sky’s existing box, a sizeable chunk of the 1TB will be taken up by Sky’s Anytime on-demand service.
Anyone looking to slot a 1TB Sky box will have to fork out £249 for the privilege, while installation fees add in another £30 for new customers and £60 for existing Sky subscribers.

Why do sky always insist on charging existing customers £60 to plug in a box? The engineers arrive, unplug the existing cables, plug the new box in, attache the cables and then they're off. About time Sky gave existing customers a good deal (cheap upgrade, free install if you do it yourself).

@ Steve ,i can confirm this will be the case sky will be giving customers a self install option in the very near future ,

Well this was very interesting. I became a new Sky+ HD customer in Oct 09 and one of their Sales techniques was to tell me that with my new HD box I will be able to view their new 3D content that is arriving in 2010, well Im guessing by this that my HD box is now not good enough for what they sold me?

Penni i can confirm that all sky hd boxes are 3D ready, all you need is a TV that is capable of showing 3d content,

Whats stopping People doing this drive upgrade themselves ? Will existing IDE/SATA hard drives of say 1tb or more work 100% correctly in the Sky HD boxes ?

I bet the new box will have a more responsive and faster EPG, As my sky hd box is aweful, It lags so much, And freezes all the time, Got a crap thomson model Thinking of even leaving sky over it, As i paid full price for my box.

I also have a rubbish thomson model that started to freeze, not receive any channels and randomly reboot. I had all the capacitors replaced, which cured most of the problems however it still behaves oddly at times. I also swapped the disk over to a 1TB which is sooo much better. Sky should bring back the decent manufacturers that they had with the original boxes such a Sony & Panasonic.

Does anyone know if the new box will carry sound and vision through the hdmi output? unlike my current hd box? also, the same as above, will the EPG be better speed

i have telephone sky about self install but you still have to pay &30.00 p & p plus £10.00 for hd a month, so I think there tv ad is breaking the law. the only thing you get for free is hd box but which way you try to do it you have to pay extra. i.e £30.00 self install or £30.00 to £60.00 for sky installation plus £10.00 a month for hd on top of your package so it is not free

I just called Sky to upgrade my Sky+ HD box to the 1.5tb model and was amazed to be told that there is a special offer of £149.00 if you self-install. Result!

I had a problem with my SKY box and it was quite a lot of hassle to get it sorted so I cancelled my subscription and signed up again a couple of months later under my wife, what was good was that we got to benefit from the new customer offers and get a new box, we did one better by signing up via a site that even offered us an extra £10 of M&S vouchers which was worthwhile if anyone is interested see www.skyhdoffer.com there are also plenty of other people offering vouchers etc even on places like ebay. This may help someone out, there is nothing more frustrating than when your box breaks and switching back so freeview!
