Siri set for older iPhones and iPad?
It was previously believed that Apple’s voice assistant Siri would not be appearing on older versions of Apple’s iPhone, or indeed the Apple iPad. But that may no longer be the case.
One of the latest rumours spreading across the web offers older iPhone and iPad users hopes of backwards compatibility.
Why Siri will only work on iPhone 4S
The rumours stem from the detective work of some very tech savvy gadget fans who have uncovered lines of code on the beta version of iOS 5.1.3 that refer to dictation, despite older iPhone models not supporting such feature.
Talk is that this could be a sign that Siri may just appear on more Apple devices than just the iPhone 4S, but older iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch models. However, Siri actually appearing on older iPhone and iPad devices is not so straightforward.
If Siri did appear on older iPhones, it is unlikely to include the full caboodle of features since the iPhone 4S uses a newer and different proximity sensor to detect movement than older models. It is this proximity sensor that enables Siri’s “Raise to speak” instruction. Without it, Siri would not work to its fullest.
As of right now Apple has always said that Siri is an iPhone 4S-exclusive feature, but that has not stopped gadget tinkerers attempting to customise older iPhones with the feature. Apple has yet to confirm any such news that Siri will appear on older models, so till then it shall remain an iPhone 4S-only feature.
