Samsung: No glasses-free 3D for 10 years
Don't plan on ditching those 3D glasses anytime soon
Just last week we told you about Samsung’s 55in glasses-free 3D prototype that the Korean tech firm predicted could make it into production in around three years.
That in itself was disappointing enough, but now Samsung has come out and said actually we’re looking at closer to 10 years for glasses-free 3D TV tech to become mainstream.
The reason, it says, is that even its impressive new prototype offers 3D viewing only from a few set angles, but to make the technology practically viable, you need to deliver 3D to at least 32 viewing spots.
“We believe that creating a prototype for lab-grade glasses-free 3D TV, broadcasting system and display will take about five years. For mass commercialisation to become possible, manufacturing costs must come down and TV broadcasters will have to upgrade infrastructure, which includes securing transmission bandwidth,” Samsung said in a statement to tech blog Slashgear.
“Attempts to put glasses-free 3D TV to market within the next 10 years will be difficult.”
We’ve said it before, and it looks like we’ll be saying it a good few more times in the future: get used to those 3D glasses, as they’re not going anywhere soon.

We don't want 3D tv. It's a pointless gimmick that isn't worth the bother. What we do want are tv broadcasts in full (1080) HD which will look marvellous on the lovely huge plasma and LCD screens we've been buying for the last four or five years. And the sooner the better.

i am one hundred and ten percent with mikey on this i personally dont watch anything in 3d and see the attempts at making tv's for 3d a huge waste of money that could be better spent e.g oled tv's or new innovations so i what i want is for 3d 2go!!

3d tv's came in to early. millions of people are just getting round to upgrading to lcd or led which still has years of life left in it.most people take years to get around to buying new tvs taking into account the cost involved.3d tv should have waited in my oppinion for a few years to get mainstream, when costs were affordable for all to be able to upgrade
