Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi iPod rival to launch
Samsung has announced two new devices it is calling Galaxy S Wi-Fi. One is a mini tablet that rivals the Dell Streak in size and usability, while the iPod Touch-style media player could be a serious threat in the non-connected media market.
Apple has long had a niche in its ecosystem for those who don’t want or need a mobile phone but would like to get a taste of iOS apps and games and for whom a tablet is just a bit too big – The iPod touch fills that need perfectly. Android, on the other hand, does not. Until now, that is.
HTC Runnymede mini-tablet or smartphone?
The Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi is available in two models, one with a 5-inch screen and the other with a 3.6-inch display. Both run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) on a 1GHz processor. Both devices have front & rear cameras (the 5-incher has a slightly better rear camera than the smaller version) and both speak wifi, USB 2.0 and Bluetooth.
The Galaxy S WI-Fi both support DivX, WMV, FLAC, OGG and MP3 among other formats so you should be able to play almost anything on it out of the box. Anything you can’t play will probably be usable via an app from Samsung’s app store or the Android Market, for which the devices have full support.
