Rumour: Sony PSP2 to launch on January 27 Is the Sony PSP's replacement coming this month?

Sony looks set to take the lead in the next-gen handheld stakes with a shock unveiling of the PSP2 in Tokyo before the end of the month.

So claims gaming site MCV, who are quoting “trade sources” as having revealed that the PSP2 will be announced on January 27.

According to the site, games publishers have known about Sony’s plans since late last year, and have been hard at work on launch titles to accompany the arrival of the new handheld.

Details on the PSP2 hardware itself remain vague, but it will certainly be interesting to see what Sony has up its sleeve, and how it manages to differentiate the console from the similarly impending Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone.

Current market-leader Nintendo is itself due to announce details of its own next-gen handheld replacement for the DS later this month – the 3D-capable Nintendo 3DS.
