Pioneer unveils 1TB Blu-ray discs

Pioneer unveils 1TB Blu-ray discs Pioneer’s massive Blu-ray discs will be able to hold masses of content… or one Kevin Costner movie

Blu-ray discs are like, well massive, innit. Well, they’ve just got even massiver, thanks to the boffs at Pioneer creating a 1Terabyte disc.

Pioneer has said that these discs will go on sale when there’s an increase demand for them, which means that the company will be concentrating mainly on its 400GB and 500GB versions first. The 400GB Blu-ray disc was being shown off at the IT Month Fair in Taipei. Here’s the tech bit: it works by stuffing 16 layers onto one disc. But the best bit? These discs are compatible with existing Blu-ray players.

So when’s this genius piece of disc technology hitting the shelves? Well, read-only versions will be available between “now and 2010,” with re-writable versions arriving just in time to record the Olympics in 2012. And what about that 1TB version? You’ll have to wait until 2013 for that bad boy.
