Philips goes solar with Econova TV
Look mum, no batteries
Dutch TV maker Philips has taken a novel approach to boosting the eco credentials of its latest planet-friendly TV, the Econova: it’s ditched the batteries in the remote control and gone solar instead.
That’s right – the Econova’s remote control has a slide-down solar panel that soaks up the light from your living room, with Philips claiming no further power is required to keep the remote topped up with juice.
But before you cry “gimmick”, the solar-powered remote is just one of many green touches Philips has bestowed on the Econova, features that have seen the planet-loving TV awarded the European Green EV 2010-2011 by the European Imaging & Sound Association.
The 42in Econova consumes just 40W of power in eco mode, uses recycled aluminium with no harmful PVC or BFRs, and its packaging contains no polystyrene buffers or plastic bags, so is fully recyclable.
Philips claims the LED-backlit Econova is “Europe’s greenest TV” and it will be gracing the shelves with its eco-conscious presence this month for around £1,199.
