Philips' 3D-tastic 21:9 Platinum incoming
Finally something to spend that spare four grand on...
Philips has forged something of a lone furrow with its Cinema 21:9 TV. The unusual aspect ratio – while actually a far closer match to the big screen than normal 16:9 panels – has yet to really catch on, yet the 21:9 remains much loved by its supporters.
So it’ll no doubt be good news to some that the 21:9 Platinum edition will be arriving to deliver those extra-wide cinema-like pictures in 3D as of this very month.
The 58in screen comes packed with the latest Philips digital TV goodies, including Bright Pro, 400Hz Clear LCD technology for distortion-free 3D pictures, Perfect Pixel HD processing and the latest Ambilight Spectra 3 version of Philips’ frame-illumination trickery. Contrast ratio is a quoted 10 million to one.
Built-in web capability will set you up with access to Philips’ Net TV service, or you can use the supplied web browser for more general surfing.
Considering the asking price of £3,999, our only quibble with the otherwise immense-sounding 58PFL9955 is that for all that cash you don’t get a pair of 3D glasses included in the deal – you’ll have to leave some change aside to buy them separately.

Ortis, Well done on your flying challenge. I know how intense it can be as I am a licensed aircraft engineer with a major airline and my trade is Avionics. I had a try on a 737-400 simulator when I did that aircraft type course in 1991 and on landing we ended up on the grass! Thats why I fix aircraft and dont fly them. I have also had a few flying lessons in a Cesena 172 and I felt the tension when watching your solo. Happy landings, Kind regards, Jorg
