Earlier this week it came out that Sony had given its motion-controlling gaming hardware the working title PlayStation Arc as it prepares to do battle with Microsoft’s Project Natal in gaming’s next-gen battleground.

Now we’ve been given a release date too, and if true it means Sony’s effort should get here first.

No less a name that Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai himself has gone on the record to confirm that Sony’s motion-controlling goodies will be wowing gamers from the autumn. And Hirai is promising “ an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users”.

Despite being significantly behind the original spring date Sony quoted when first showing off its motion-sensing tech at the E3 gaming show last year, it still means the Arc is likely to be safely on the shelves by the time Project Natal arrives closer to the end of the year.

Sony has confirmed that the Arc wand will work in conjunction with its existing PlayStation Eye camera, with the software that gets them to work together soon to be detailed.
