Nokia planning self-charging handset
Nokia exploring new charging solutions
Nokia could be developing a self-charging handset, according to patents filed by the Finnish phone company this week. They describe a system that will charge itself using kinetic energy from you as you move around day to day.
The patent application describes a phone that uses piezoelectric crystals that compress during movement, which in turn creates the electricity used to charge the phone’s battery. Although you’d probably need to do a lot of dancing around to power an energy-sapping smartphone such as the Nokia N900 (pictured).
This isn’t Nokia’s first foray into new power technology for mobiles – plans for a Nokia device that could draw power from its surroundings popped up recently. Could we be soon be free from the tyranny of wall chargers?

I'd be surprised if Seiko - pioneers of the Kinetic range of watches that charges their batteries via movement - haven't already patented that kind of technology. Seems like a no brainer to me. Plus, the phone in the picture is the Nokia N97, not the N900.

Not to be a annoyance or anything, but the phone shown is not the Nokia N900, but rather the N97... Good idea though.

Brilliant idea ! Hope they manage to do it. As for it not catching on (unless it's ridiculously expensive) who in there right mind is going to refuse a phone that charges itself ? Even if it only extends usage for a few hours . Oh ! And I'm typing this on my N97 which has had to act as a laptop for the last couple of days as mine is in for repair :) One more thing the photo is somewhat irrelivant , as I doubt the first 'Self charging' phone will look like either !
