Rumour - New Nintendo 3DS coming with dual analog sticks, may drop 3D?

If a new rumour is to be believed, Nintendo are about to drop a revamped 3DS with some design tweaks – including a second analog control stick. More controversially, there may be plans afoot to drop the 3D element entirely.

The Nintendo 3DS has already made quite a splash with its glasses-free 3D and clever reworking of some of Nintendo’s classic games but although many fans have taken to the new handheld, sales haven’t been quite as stellar as predicted. Some gamers also find the 3D effect disorienting, with some concern expressed that it may damage children’s eyesight.

It’s thought that Nintendo may well revise the 3DS hardware and alter the way the 3D effect works or even ditch it entirely. The other major hardware change said to be coming is a 3DS model with a second analog stick. There are said to be plans to sell an add-on stick that will attach to the original 3DS in some way so that early adopters can play games designed for the new controller.

Quite how this will work is unclear, although it could attach to the existing four face buttons. Details of the stick are said to have been sent to key developers so that it can be integrated into future titles.

So, if Nintendo do indeed release a new version of the 3DS do you think you’ll buy one, or are you happy with the one you own? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments below.

A 3DS without 3D? The 3D was the only thing stopping me from getting one (aside from it's current awful game line up), and a second stick? Interesting to say the least. Now, I just need the money to get this possible 3D less 3DS.

Nitendo were told when they released the 3D effect handheld console that it would damage kids eyes as it would make them to focus on the 3D effect so much. I'm glad they are thinking of altering it or ditching the 3D all together If i had a kid, I would not let them play with something that has been proven to cause eye damage.

People are forgetting that you can turn the 3D effect off on the 3DS there is a nice switch that does this function for you! I do hope they don't drop the 3D, a tweek may be nice though :)

If you take the 3D out of 3DS, you're left with S. What a name for a games console!

Im really annoyed about this. The Nintendo seal used to stand for quality, now they are releasing hardware that lets face it wasnt ready for the open market. So if you have already bought a 3DS, as I have we might get a clip on analoge stick, which I suspect i will have to take off and put on every time I want to play, frankly this isnt good enough. By releasing this updated 3DS so soon after the orignal, Nintendo are basically giving their 'loyal fans' a big kick in the backside while they laugh all the way to the bank. If this story is true my 3DS and my Wii will be on eBay ASAP and i will NEVER buy another Nintendo product again.

The only reasons i have not bought a 3DS yet is because the battery life is worse than appauling and the current line up of games is a bit naff. I have tried the 3DS in a few stores now for about 20 mins eack and i have been fine with the 3D at full, so i have no problems with the 3D. I was just going to wait till Nintendo inevitably release a Lite or simillar version with at least doubled battery life and there was a few more games. Looks like Nintendo have not listened to their customers :/

What would be the point of dropping the 3D function? It's been proven to be fine when used in moderation and you can always turn off the 3D function every twenty minutes or so and play in 2D for a while. All they need to do is change the line up of games (or hurry up and release Mario Kart 7, the new Super Smash Bros. game, Super Mario 3D Land and other games from Nintendo's popular franchises), but it's not like you can't use DS games on the 3DS.
