Microsoft Zune: the PMP we'll never see
Alas, poor Zune. We knew you. Well...
When Microsoft first launched the Zune MP3 player back in 2006, it had grand plans on duking it out toe to toe with the iPod for the pocket gadget spoils.
But after five years of playing second fiddle, Microsoft has decided to can its media player for good – without ever giving us here in the UK a taste of what we’ve been missing out on.
The Zune enjoyed modest success since launching in the US in November 2006, but despite plenty of rumours Microsoft did launch it internationally, and our only exposure to the Zune brand has been the online portal that appeared when Windows Phone 7 launched late last year.
“We have nothing to announce about another Zune device,” a Microsoft spokesman said simply to confirm the news.
The final model in the Zune range was the Zune HD, which boasted an OLED touchscreen and HD video out connection. Microsoft says the Zune portal won’t be affected by the decision to can its pocket hardware.

To be fair the Zune was always going to have a tough time in the market place as a result of the likes of Apple, Sony and Samsung. Tough luck, but I'm sure the zune name will eventually make a comeback.
