Microsoft Kinect set to take over PC in February
Kinect has already proved a smash hit with Xbox 360 gamers, but Microsoft has even bigger plans for its revolutionary motion-sensing technology. It’s coming to a computer near you very soon, so put your hands together (or just swipe them in the air like a loon).
Microsoft has just revealed that it will be bringing Kinect to PC on February 1st. This will allow PC developers to release games and apps that respond to gestural commands.
The Kinect device itself is a long camera device that can map body movement and turn it into real time control inputs. It can also accept voice command, but as most PCs today come with a mic that’s less of a factor here.

Still, Kinect’s already working with the Metro interface that was recently introduced to the Xbox 360 console, and with Windows 8 set to adopt the same UI we could soon be controlling our desktops with swipes of our hands.
Of course, to do this a few tweaks will need to be made to how Kinect operates. For one thing, you need quite a lot of space for the system to work on your Xbox 360, which is fine for the living room but not so great a prospect for your office. This is why Microsoft is introducing a ‘near mode’ to enable close-up applications of the Kinect technology.
While current Xbox Kinect units already work with Windows PCs, the company will now release a dedicated Windows version of the hardware (as well as update the software for interfacing with it). As a result, Xbox Kinect units set to be made in the second half of 2012 will not be compatible your computer.
We’re intrigued to see what other applications can be found for this Kinect technology. Sure, it’s fun for punting virtual footballs and indulging in hilarious/painful party games, but can it really enhance your general desktop browsing or even your work?

I am very excited about Kinect coming to PC..... I think it would be very good replacement for TrackIR that tracks head movements flight simulations. I hope that Microsoft designs it so that it is compatible on both Xbox360 & PC.

I'm sure it will have some use in the world of disabled living to enable people with reduced motor control to operate other software more remotely.
