Microsoft game streaming service to challenge OnLive

After word that the Xbox 360 will be getting lots of new television channels, comes a report that Microsoft is readying a form of universal game streaming service to rival OnLive. It could mean Xbox 360 games will be available almost anywhere, and across many devices.

The service, which is reportedly expected to launch in 2012 will provide gamers with an online portal from which to play games from on all Microsoft devices – including Windows Phone 7 handsets, tablets and PCs.

Lots of new television channels

Game streaming service OnLive recently showed that streaming full length PC and consoles games to computers and televisions around the world can be done.

In August Microsoft announced that a mobile version of Kinectimals will be heading to Windows Phone 7 phones in the near future, and Windows Phone users can already play dedicated Xbox LIVE GAMES on their handsets, so streaming full titles would be the next step, should Microsoft choose to do so.

While Microsoft has yet to officially confirm the news publicly, the possibility is enough to excite any gaming fan. It could mean you’ll be able to play games such as Gears of War 3 and Forza Motorsport 4 on your smartphone.

Recent revelations of a Cloud storage service for Xbox LIVE also suggest that the ingredients for such a service are already there. And with such a large Xbox 360 fanbase any such move could be enough to give services such as OnLive the scares.

The PS3 has always been a FAR superior multi-media console, whereas the xbox 360 has been a bit of a joke, even inferior to the wii in some respect (Internet?, iPlayer?). It's a shame that its taken them this long to realise this. Though even with these new services, it still won't be the complete package that you get with the PS3. I do like my xbox, but the PS3 has FAR better options to customize various aspects and play various types of media AND it allows you to store pretty much any media on its hard drive, something the xbox is very restricted with.

Xbox 360 is better because it has a faster response time and better games such as forza gears of war and the epic halo

The ps3 may be a better multimedia console, but in terms of the games (what the machine is primarily used for), they are mostly disappointing. Even the ice cream cone controller is embarrasing compared to the kinect. The 360 does have its faults (v.loud and no blu-ray nor web browser), but does have many more games than the ps3 and downloadable content for games such as cod will only be released on the 360 first before the ps3. Traditional match winners such the ps exclusive - grand turismo series has now been surpised by the forza series. Maybe its time for sony to more toward gaming on mobile phones (possibly the future of gaming)?
