Kodak to stop making digital cameras and camcorders

Sad times for fans of Kodak camera fans. The famous camera company has announced that it will soon stop making compact cameras or camcorders. The news comes after Kodak filed for bankruptcy last month. Kodak will instead focus on “more profitable growth opportunities.”

And that means Kodak will phase out what it calls its “dedicated capture devices business” – that includes digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames in the first half of 2012.

In a statement by Kodak, the company states that phasing out its product portfolio was always part of its current long-term plan to improve its margins in the business, and that Kodak’s announcement is just a part of that process.

Kodak insists that it “continues to have a strong position in the personal imaging market.” Mainly in printers and photo labs for consumers and businesses. Just don’t expect to see any new cameras and camcorders later this year.

That’s one less competitor to the likes of Olympus, Nikon, Pentax and co. Have you recently purchased a Kodak camera? Saddened by the news?
