Kindle to get apps and games
The Kindle, soon with games
If you’re one of the many that have laid down some large notes for Amazon to send you a Kindle from across the Atlantic, you’ll be pleased to hear you’ll soon be able to do much more than just read books and mags on it.
Amazon has announced it will be sending out a kit for eager developers to start building apps for the Kindle platform, and not just literary ones.
The online retailer says possibilities include “travel books that suggest activities based on real-time weather and current events, cookbooks that recommend menus based on size of party and allergies, and word games and puzzles”, and it’s clearly looking at Apple’s App Store for inspiraton.
It’s also likely to be a reaction to the impending arrival of the Apple tablet, which could start hurting its sales if Amazon doesn’t add a few more strings to its bow.
The developer kit goes out next month, with the first apps set to appear later in the year.
