JVC Kaboom is back and larger than life
Revisiting a modern musical classic
If you like your gadgets with all the subtlety of a wrecking ball, JVC’s reprised Kaboom Boombox might be just the mobile sound system for you.
First spotted at CES last month, the Kaboom shares its name and styling with the late 90s equivalent, and is now officially carving a mile-wide path out into the world at large.
But while it may share the bombastic styling of the original, under the surface it’s a surprisingly sophisticated piece of kit.
The inevitable iPod docking station takes pride of place right at the centre of the Kaboom, while other audio boxes ticked include a CD player, FM tuner and support for a bunch of digital formats like MP3 and WMA. You also get a USB port and a front audio input too.
The JVC Kaboom is available in RV-NB50 (black and silver) and RV-NB52 (black only) options, but sadly going high-tech and retro at the same time doesn’t come cheap and you’ll be lucky to pay less than £250 for the Kaboom’s company.

I have one of the originals - RVB90G, 60 Watts total power - from back in 1999 where for three years it got me through the mundaness of working at Safeway. This thing has taken a lot - and i mean A LOT - of abuse over the last 11 years and it still punches the bass out as if it were new. But having been dropped on concrete and tarmac a few times from a respectable height, and general bashing throughout University as well the tape deck and backlight have given up. I remember sticking it in my boot (powered of the car battery) and comparing the sound to my mates 400W JBL bassbox. We all agreed this compared very well, but lost out on the really deep bass power. Nowadays I hook it up to my Archos MP3 player and it still rattles the doors and furnishings Sadly the newer versions only appear to be 40Watts total output, but it's still likely to be the best product of its kind. Best £140 I ever spent.
