Issues with first Windows Phone 7 update

Issues with first Windows Phone 7 update An expensive Windows Phone 7 brick

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system certainly has a lot going for it, and it needs to have too considering just how strong Android and Apple’s iOS have become.

So we imagine Steve Ballmer and co aren’t too pleased with how the rollout of the first update to the OS is going so far. A number of Samsung Omnia 7 owners have reported that attempting to install the update saw their phones return an error, or even freeze completely and become unusable.

Microsoft says it is looking into the matter and has been recommending that anyone with a Samsung Windows Phone 7 device hold off on installing the update until they next receive a prompt to do so, which should be in a few days.

Best of all, this isn’t even the promised first update everyone was expecting, which will add copy and paste support and improved performance and search to WinPho handsets. Instead, it’s simply an update to the update process itself, designed to pave the way for the real deal early next month.

yer yer yer! We get it, You all love apple and wont let any one else have some good press! how many faults were there with the iphone when that came out? You should call your show "The Gadget (as long as its apple) show"! Come on people, I'm getting fed-up of this! Why dont you go back to how you were back in 2009 (before the ipad)? IMPARTIAL!!!

As Johnny just put, stop with the endless 'apple rules above all others'. the apple faults are numerous, their major one being CONTROL, use our hardware, software, don't link to other comps, you must buy music and video from us... If you like aluminium over-priced limited tech, then apple are for you, but for the rest of us - and there are many - the apple worship is very boring. LG are bringing out a dual-core 3D screen phone, way beyond the iphone, but will you give it the same coverage? p.s. Jason, HP have been making tablet comps for years, it isn't an apple invention: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablet_personal_computer

I have to agree with 'jonny', you do give apple more chances. I am completly impartial, I like apple but I also like other tech and that is completly unfair, its a little bug it will get fixed soon. On the show you did a whole review for the iPad but not the other tablets, why? Please try to be more impartial next time!

Try not to bury your heads in the sand! The iPhone and iPad are far better products than anyone else is making just now. Until any other companies come up with a product that is equal or better then apple can keep the prices up and make a fortune at our expense. Yes I have an iPhone and I couldn't be without it now.

I'm not a great fan of apple products. They're all style an not much substance but at least they work. This is classic Microsoft they release buggy software and the users pick up the heartache. I had a windows phone once and never will again. It wasn't even useable as a basic phone for 80% of the time. WIndows 7 may be better but Microsoft has some inherant quality control issues they need to address before I would ever consider a windows phone. After Nokia's recent declaration to defect to windows my next purchase will be an Android for sure.

This is all but a surprise... I have been using M$ for years, and I am all but a fan.. Everything they make is just not working the way it should, or is very unsafe. They are patching problems instead of fixing them, and we as end users can only do want they want.. and if they mess up, we're the victims It is too bad that even these days M$ is so dominant.. There's a lot of other good stuff out there, and that actually does what it is supposed to do... (Mac & Linux) Look at it when you buy a new laptop.. it's a trail version this, a trail version that.. and it just doesn't work... not to mention all the crap software they put on from the builders (HP,Toshiba,......) I am a GREAT Apple fan.. owning one made me see that there is way more than crappysoft.. And yes Apple is expensive, but the good thing is, the moment you switch it on from new, IT WORKS!!! without all the crap... And that all started after I got my very first eMac G4 700 MHz from my brother in law. He showed me what it did, and I started using it alongside Windows... it was only weeks before I banned the Windows machine...and I have used a Mac ever since Microsoft thinks they can get even more market share by introducing a new phone OS, but they got it all wrong.. and are way too late... Apple will take over (they already have more market share than M$ has) and Microsoft will only lose more and more ground.. it will maybe be a corporate OS only... And let's be honest.. Microsoft isn't that fancy anymore.. Even Windows 7 is a better Vista (look at it in Command promt, it's Windows 6 (vista), not 7, so it's another update).. and you need a lot of power to run the damn software... they've lost it after Windows 98... I can understand the reaction of people saying that MS is better and so on, but that is because they are the biggest... Any programmer will know that when he writes a program it's better sold on Windows than on a Mac or Linux, but as soon as people dare to switch, and leave Microsoft, the programmers will do the same... Iphone, iPad, iPod are all great devices.. they are refreshing, and do what YOU want... Microsoft still thinks we're somewhere in the early 90's and that's the whole reason for them to lose ground...

We have a bet in our house as to how many time it will be mentioned on your show. I still love the show and think you all do an amazing job. but please understand it is getting a bit boring now.

Will you lot stop moaning! The antenna problem on the iPhone reached media news channels and news papers, lets see how much attention this HUGE problem gets! I bet it won't be as much as the iPhone!! The iPhone is better than other smartphones by a MILE, the iPad is better than other tablets by a MILE, and Macs are THE best computing experiences! Thats why they get so much coverage on the gadget show! Anyone who dislikes macs, iPads, or iPhones are just jealous that they can't afford the superior Apple products, end of.

Hi Tom. I'm sorry but you are WRONG!! I can afford apple things I have an ipod, I could get a ipad, I could get a macbook! But I dont like the UI on them! Thats why I dont get them! I am not jealous at all! I go for good practical gear. not over priced fashion items!

Hi Jonny, I completely understand where you're coming from, and apple can seem controlling by wanting you to stay on the "apple path", but when you do get on the path ie. iPhone iPad Mac, everything works fanatastically with each other, although this can bankrupt you at times. I don't agree with the fashion item description though, I buy apple products purely because I think they work amazingly well. Just because the design is fantastic, doesn't make it a fashion item, I bought the iPhone, loved it, bought the iPad, loved it, and recently bought an iMac, and yeah, love it. The design of the product is not my motive for purchasing Apple products, although I do have to say the iMac is one of the best computer designs out there. But I do agree with you that some people do buy iPhones and iPads purely as "fashion items" and signs of wealth.

It does anoy me how much the Gadget show has become Apple biased, this isn't because I'm totally anti Apple as I own an iPod touch and it's great but I don't agree that Apple is definately the best out there, I have the HTC Desire and I much prefer the way it works as apposed to the iPod Touch, the fact that a web page comes up as it's supposed to because it has flash and the fact that I have the freedom to get the phone to do what I want. For example I've installed an alternative email program and I can also have a switch on the main screen to toggle the bluetooth on/off instead of having to mess around in the settings menu. I'm not saying the Desire is perfect, it isn't but Apple now has some serious competition out there and needs to watch out that its tight control over its products doesn't end up killing them. It wouldn't be the first company to go from top dog to also ran.

If anything, they should make a windows xp sp2 phone, that way there won't be as many bugs! I recently changed to apple and a couldn't be happier!

I agree with you Tom and everyone else in favour of Apple. I used Windows and a PC for 10 years of my life, with constant problems. Bought myself the MacBook Pro 7 months ago, and NOT had a SINGLE problem with it. Not got any anti virus programmes or firewall on it either and surprise surprise not had any viruses, it works like a dream and the quality and speed is amazing. You plug in a new appliance into your Mac such as a printer and it works instantly without all this crap installing that Windows gives you. Yes i think the iPad is a bit of a disappointment as its simply a big iPod touch, but you can't fault the ease of you it gives you. If you give an Apple product to anyone, they will know how to use it a lot quicker than if you gave someone a different product. My grandma has an iPod touch and loves how easy it is to use. My step grandma has another mp3 player and constantly complains at how hard it is to work. You can't say Apple are rubbish/ get too much advertising, as they work hard at making their products and market them a lot more than other companies. Before slatting Apple, try their products for a month and you'll see how your opinion changes.

I fully agree with you Auriane, spot on description of apple, well done! I had same problem with my nan, got her a netbook and she finds it very hard to use, but when ever I visit her with my iPad, you'd think she's been using the iPad for years!
