iPhone 5 to come with embedded SIM?

iPhone 5 to come with embedded SIM? iPhone unlocking could soon be a thing of the past

We’re still at least half a year away from the annual unveiling of the next-gen iPhone, but already the iPhone 5 rumours are coming thick and fast.

The latest nugget of speculation is that Apple is working with SIM card maker Gemalto on a custom-made SIM that can theoretically work with any carrier, to be embedded directly into the iPhone hardware.

The appeal of such a system for Apple is that it would still give the consumer a choice of networks, but would allow Apple itself to take the selection process in-house, with the carrier selection process simply another configuration option when buying the iPhone 5 from the Apple Store.

Of course, it also means there’ll be no way of inserting a different SIM card, meaning you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone or even use a SIM from your previous iPhone – no doubt also part of the plan for Apple.

The rumours have been surfaced by “sources inside European carriers”, which is just vague enough that we can keep this one firmly in the rumours category for now. But enough of the details make sense that we wouldn’t be surprised to see this story making a return at some point.

This is just another reason why I would not buy an apple iPhone. Apple are doing a lot of the same rubbish that they try and accuse Microsoft of; taking away consumer choice. I'll stick with my new Samsung Galaxy S. With the Google integration, it knocks the socks off of anything Apple have to offer.

Jack, you do realise this is an ongoing pattern that Apple carry out? April: New iPad June: New iPhone September: New iPods October: New MacBooks November: New iMacs Some don't update every year, but one thing is certain. The iPhone will be updated every June for years to come.

If for any reason I feel that Apple is compromising my choice as a consumer, I would opt out for a different manufacturer no doubt. I hate manipulation no matter how good the device/product. AS simple as that.

The thing i hate about apple is, we go to buy the new iPhone or iPad and as soon as we get them we hear that a new one is about to come out.

Apple don't give chance for the older phone to kick in, alot of iphone 4th gen come on a 24 month contract so its hard when you've just got one and then a new one comes out its daft!

I know it's annoying and i've got an ipad and apparently there's going to be another one coming soon but i don't see how the iphone 5 is better than the iphone 4 but if anything it's worse because you have no choice of who you want to go with and i know that i'm staying with Orange.

What is everyone getting uppity about? I can understand the frustration of those that buy the latest model and then 6 months later a new one comes out. But all you people complaining about Apple taking away your choice, did you read the article or are you just pre-menstrual? By embedding the sim directly in the phone, the phone companies no longer control what sims can be used in a phone, this can also help stop the mass market for stealing phones, if the sim is embedded, you can't simply change it for another sim. Not sure how this would effect the re-sale value though?? Maybe you would not be able to sell the phone? Or you would have to get the phone companies to change it in the hardware. So far I have not read anything that would suggest this is a bad idea.

If this is true, I will not be happy, I am a devoted apple fan. But this is just annoying... I currently have a 3GS and it's got another year on contract, so I was going to buy the iPhone 5 and just put my current sim in it, so it looks like im going to buy iPhone 4 and just get my simcard cut. Very annoyed.

I personally dont think we are going to see a new iphone this year. Apple have already pointed their fingers towards a release date for a white iphone 4 so why would they release it if they were to then release iphone 5? I agree with the comments about apple and their restrictions however, apple do have an annoying habit of telling us what we can and cant do with the products we purchase from them. There are a lot of rumours flying about stating what features the next iphone will have but what I think is they need to go back to the drawing board and give their customers what they want instead of what they want them to have. The iphone has many features missing from it and I think the following would be good additions...... 1. Proper bluetooth connectivity so files can be transferred to pc or phones other than iphones. 2. The ability to remove pre-installed (unwanted) apps. 3. The ability to create your own ringtones without having to edit a song down to 30 seconds, convert it to m4a and changing the file extension to m4r to get it to work on your phone. Why dont apple allow us to simply use songs from our ipod playlist as a ringtone? 4. The abilty of iphone to appear on your computer as a removable hard drive so files can just be dragged onto the device instead of needing to use itunes which lets you do very little when it comes to transferring photo's. 5. The ability to add removable storage to iphone. 6. A removable battery with a much better lifespan. 7. A better quality camera with zenon flash and more photo editing software as standard and functionality such as iso, macro, face detection and image stabilization. 8. Unlimited downloads of purchased apps (if an app is accidentallly deleted your made to pay for it again). 9. A better system for displaying app icons on the screen. I dont know about anybody else but I like to be able to see the image I have on my home screen instead of it being completely covered with app icons, I personally think it would be better if the apps just went on the tray at the bottom of the screen and you could scroll through them with finger swipes. Virtually every phone on the market except the iphone have the ability to perform of all of the above and I personally feel apple are letting their customers down by leaving these things out. I currently have a 3gs and will be upgrading soon but I'm not sure if I will stick with apple at the moment. Apple do make beautiful products but the restrictions are unfair, they should listen more to what their customers want and give it to them, especially when they charge such a premium for their hardware.

OMG! Would people get some common sense! Apple are the best at computers, phones, tablets and music players. They are worth more than Intel and Microsoft put together. What does that tell you?
