iPhone 3G S vs Nokia N97: oh it's on!

Today’s the day folks! the Apple iPhone 3GS and Nokia N97 have gone on sale in the UK. Both are awesome handsets, but which mobile should you plump for? Apple’s latest version of its Messiah mobile or Nokia’s flagship touchscreen phone? Read on for a comparison…

Nokia N97 The Nokia N97 is the Finnish phone company’s monstrously powerful follow-up to the N96, and somehow the phone boffins have managed to cram in even more impressive specs, including 32GB of storage (that’s expandable to 48GB via a microSD card slot) and full slide-out QWERTY keyboard with the most satisfying ‘clunk’ in the business.

Like the N96, the Nokia N97 comes at you with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a five-megapixel camera and GPS (with satnav functions ready to go straight out the box – unlike the iPhone 3G S). But it’s the 3.5-inch screen that’s the killer feature. It slides out and flicks up for an optimum viewing angle and it’s awesome. The Nokia N97 also arrives with Ovi Store preloaded, so you can pick up any apps that take your fancy.

Apple iPhone 3G S The Hallelujah Handset. The Messiah Mobile. Call it what you will. But there’s no denying that iPhone is an impressive piece of kit. So can the iPhone 3G S live up to its predecessors? Well it has more clock speed and more RAM than its forefathers, plus HSDPA means a faster experience all round.

Apple has also bumped the camera up to three megapixels, and finally included video recording. There’s even a 32GB version to park all your songs and videos. If you were intrigued by the iPhone 3G but couldn’t quite take the plunge, the iPhone 3G S’s hardware combined with the new iPhone OS 3.0 may just have ironed out the final flaws to convince you to make the switch.

Software-wise, there’s now support for tethering your phone to a laptop, better web video, Find My iPhone to track your precious mobile should you lose it, turn by turn allowing for a TomTom iPhone app, and copy and paste. It’s almost the perfect touchscreen phone.

The verdict… It’s almost too close to call this one. Both the N97 and iPhone 3G S have their merits. In the end it’ll come down to personal taste. If you’re an Apple fan then you’ll love all the iPhone 3G S’s new features. If you can’t stand what Apple delivers, then the Nokia N97 is pretty much the best alternative.
