HTC and TomTom team up on navigation
The HTC Legend HD will debut the new software in Europe
Sat nav specialist TomTom has announced a partnership with phone maker HTC to expand on the existing HTC Locations navigation software across HTC’s range.
The news was announced by senior TomTom exec Marten van Gool, who stated: “The beauty of it is that the maps are preloaded and instantly available at users’ fingertips. For the first time, this makes the power of TomTom navigation content available ‘in-pocket’ for HTC smartphone users.”
In some ways it looks as if HTC is trying to emulate Nokia and its decision earlier this year to pre-load all new Nokias with the Nokia Maps software, providing free navigation anywhere on the planet, also with all mapping info stored on board the phone.
Initially the expanded HTC Locations service will be restricted to Desire HD and Desire Z users in Europe, but the bigger prize for TomTom looks to be the US market, where it will surely feel allying with one of the strongest mobile hardware makers around right now will give it added ammunition to take on market leader Garmin.

Hope they make it available for the desire too. My old winmobile phone ran tomtom just using gps which was great. My desire needs gps & data connection to use satnav = not good & expensive as I don't have data plan! Come on htc, sort it out.
