Half of UK still thinks 3D costs too much

The Gadget Show  Tuesday 22 March 2011

Half of UK still thinks 3D costs too much Will the Nintendo 3DS change people's perceptions about 3D?

Look, nobody likes high prices, but new technology costs money to develop, and some of that cost is passed down to the customer.

According to a new Best Buy survey here in the UK, though, in 3D’s case that cost is still too high, with nearly half of the 2,000 people surveyed saying they feel the technology is too expensive.

Prices are steadily coming down as 3D catches on, but for 48 per cent of those questioned it still needs to come down some more before they’ll buy in – even though 70 per cent have had some exposure to the technology and enjoy using it.

The survey was conducted as part of Best Buy’s attempts to push 3D ahead of the Nintendo 3DS’ launch this Friday. The 3DS may ensure 3D gaming has a bright future, but the survey revealed that for home cinema there’s still a lot of work to do: just 16 per cent of those who had tried 3D did so either at home or at someone else’s home.

Rob Wilkins, Best Buy’s head of home theatre and entertainment, is hopeful that will change. “With the popularity of big blockbusters such as Avatar, people may believe that to achieve an effective 3D experience they need to spend thousands of pounds on 3D TVs and equipment,” he said.

i hope nintendo listen to it and put the prices down in all the shops! i think the RRP is too expensive but the cheapest price ive found (£187) is okay.

I think people are a little more hesitant about the cost of these gadgets nowadays because the time between a new product's launch and the launch of its successor is a lot shorter than it used to be. With the latest gadgets being as much a fashion statement as they are useful it doesn't take long for the latest thing to become redundant and I believe people are less keen to spend a large sum of cash on something that's likely to be superceded in under a year. Doesn't stop me wanting one though!
