Get comfy with the SOFT Rocker solar-powered chair!
We weren’t expecting to see a solar-powered tear-drop shaped wooden chair appear on our cool gadgets radar, but now we’ve seen the pictures we definitely want to try one out.
Called the SOFT Rocker, the solar-powered chair appears to be anything but soft, and is actually made out of wood. The shape of it still looks brilliantly inviting, however, as it’s designed more for lounging or having a nap than sitting up.
Although it looks comfortable, there are some downsides. The tear-drop shape sees the curved wood continuing over your head, and back down by your feet, with the solar panel built into the top of it. Great for the panel to catch rays, but not so good when you’re working on a sun tan.
In fact, even with the relatively narrow width of the SOFT Rocker, we could well imagine coming out of a lunch break with the dreaded taxi driver’s tan – with one arm benefiting from the sun, while the rest of you is shaded by the top of the chair.
As for the solar panel, it harvests up to 35 watts of power, with USB ports to charge your mobile phone and other digital devices.
Whether we’ll be seeing the SOFT Rocker around town in the future remains to be seen, but at present it’s just a concept at MIT.
