Garmin gets the Android bug
Satnav supremo Garmin will release the nuvifone and an Android handset later this year
The Garmin nuvifone has already had more delays than our nation’s trains this winter, but now the satnav maestro is insisting that its smart phone will be getting a mid-2009 release… alongside an Android-toting handset.
We don’t know much about this unnamed phone yet, but we do know it will run Google’s OS, will have GPS (it’s what Garmin does!) and will be manufactured by those masters of mini-netbook manufacturing, Asus. Garmin joined the Open Handset Alliance last month alongside Sony Ericsson, Asus and Toshiba, so this announcement doesn’t really come as a surprise.
What this also means is the nuvifone probably won’t run Android, which is a shame, but forgivable given the absolute awesomeness of its proposed spec (it’s the complete phone and GPS solution, apparently). Both phones look set for an early Taiwanese launch, with a Western release following. We can’t wait…
