Game sales set to topple music and video
The game industry's had a fruitful year thanks to the likes of Grand Theft Auto IV
Games will soon be outselling music and video for the first time ever this year.
That’s according to Verdict Research who is predicting a rise of 42 percent in game sales to reach £4.64 billion in 2008, leaving music and video trailing at £4.46 billion (aw, bless).
It’s been a stellar year for games with titles such as GTA IV, Mario Kart Wii, Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots and the FIFA and Pro Evolution footy franchises out this year. Not to mention the much hyped LittleBigPlanet out today.
There’s some doubt to the claims though, as it includes sales of game hardware as well. But game sales alone have already closed the gap on music.
Figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association show 2007 game sales at £1.7 billion compared to £1.4 billion for music and £2.2 billion for video.
But with Christmas just around the corner gaming could just come out on top this year.
