Fly for free with Microsoft Flight
When was the last time you checked out a flight SIM? We’ve a fair bet it was years ago, back in the days of ‘Cool Britannia’ when your PC was running Windows 95. Well, it seems that Microsoft is set to take to the clouds once more with a newly re-imagined version of its hugely time consuming Microsoft Flight Simulator, in the form of Microsoft Flight.
The best thing about the new version of Microsoft Flight is that it is set to be completely free to download and own. In the basic version you’ll get access to one area, Hawaii, but sign up and play with a Games for Windows Live account and you’ll be given extra free content, as well as a wealth of little extras. Now that sounds like a deal and a half.
Naturally, there is the opportunity to delve a little deeper by purchasing even more content that adds new aircraft, regions and customisation features to your games. Microsoft hasn’t let rip what these paid-for extras will consist of just but with a serious hard-core of flight SIM fans out there, we’re sure treats will be in abundance.
If being a commercial flyer isn’t enough for you, then Microsoft is building Flight with a Pilot Wings twist, so if you’re looking for challenges and obstacles to test you reflexes, nerve and flying skills then you’re in for some fun.
Microsoft Flight is currently in Beta phase, which you sign up for now, with a full flight plan set for release this Spring.

The graphics may be brilliant but in my opinion this new title will be a failure. The later versions of MS Flight Sim could be added to by players who were able to design and add in aircraft and buildings customised to their own specifications. It was so much fun flying my own aircraft from my local highly detailed airport into a global environment. Coupled with simulated airlines, Air Traffic Control etc. FSX was a true simulator rather than a game. MS Flight it seems has dropped all that. All aircraft will be paid for commercial products excepting for the few freebies to get you started, global scenery does not exist and neither do commercial airliners. MS seem to be aiming at a totally different market, and will probably succeed as dedicated Flight Simmers, according to the forums, are set to abandon MS as the sim producer of choice.
