Etymotic ETY-Kids3 in-ear headphones designed for kid-safe listening

It’s not often you hear about headphones from the top earbud makers that are built especially for kids, but that’s just what the ETY-Kids headphones are are.

Crafted by the audio experts at Etymotic, the ETY-Kids3 feature volume controls that promise to not exceed safe levels, without skimping on sound quality and detail. Parents and eardrum conscious audiophiles, read on.

Just announced, the Etymotic ETY-Kids3 is the end result of studies that have shown that listening to music at loud volumes leads to hearing damage later in life. To counter this, the Etymotic ETY-Kids3 has a volume control that stays within safe levels for children.

It might sound like spoilsports, but far from it. Etymotic insists that at the highest volumes, kids will still be able to hear as much sound detail as before. All background sound is blocked out, so there’s no reason to complain of low volumes.

There will be two versions: ETY-Kids3 and ETY-Kids5. The Etymotic ETY-Kids3 features a three-button control headset, and is designed to work with all Apple products. The ETY-Kids5 features a universal earphone that works with any portable device.

A feature called Awareness! listens to the wearer’s surroundings, and sends certain sounds such as traffic, or train conductor announcements directly into the headset, so that kids won’t miss their next train stop while listening. That sounds pretty aware to us.

The Etymotic ETY-Kids3 and ETY-Kids5 will both be on show at CES 2012, where we’ll be hoping to hear more on a UK release date.
