Cowon 3D offers glasses-free 3D
Cowon: first past the specs-free 3D post
Glasses-free 3D represents something of a Holy Grail for the world of technology right now, so the Cowon 3D represents something of a coup for the Korean gadget maker, taking the title of the world’s first ever auto-stereoscopic 3D media player.
Of course, offering up 3D without the obligatory specs is much easier the smaller the screen size, but at 4.8in in size, the Cowon 3D is certainly respectable, especially given the 800×480-pixel resolution that goes with it.
The operating system on board is the slightly odd choice of Windows CE 6.0, though the 3D is compatible with all recent versions of Windows, as well as Mac OS X and Linux.
All the usual music, video and picture formats are supported, as is Flash via the choice of two built-in browsers. Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity are both welcome, and the latter facilitates 1080p video output.
A choice of 32GB or 64GB of flash storage completes a generous feature set, but Cowon has seemingly provided plenty of juice to power it all, with the battery rated to last for 10 hours of video playback, 45 hours of music and 300 hours on standby.
The Cowon 3D is so far only been pencilled in for a South Korean launch, where it launches later this month with prices of £280 and £330 (equivalent) for the two models.

This sounds kind of weird but strange at the same time, I truly wonder whether 3D should be advertised as a media system in such a small format. It will hardly be any thing like what you expect from a true Real D or 3D film on a42inch plus screen or cinema format. I really think 3D may be the next technology to hit the new year, but I for one will not be buying any thing 3D where the ratio is so small, that is unless you get out standing after sales, and the product shows breath taking pictures, video and quality. Lets hope it is just amazing and is the next best thing to be introduced.

Unfortunately, the 'slightly odd choice of windows CE' is a load of rubbish if it's anything like the COWON V5 or X7. All we need now is Rockbox 3D :) I can see why people would want 3D on a small screen. It will probably also take off in a big way after Nintendo get the 3DS on sale.
