Casio's new baby is harder than it looks
Casio Exilim EX-G1 – tough and pocket-friendly
Casio has unveiled the world’s slimmest rugged camera, the Exilim EX-G1. At just 20mm wide it’s distinctly pocketable, but it’s built to survive too, with shock-resistant parts used throughout.
It’s also happy going for a dip in 10 feet of water for up to an hour, and Casio claims it survived multiple drops from seven feet in testing, though it stops short of guaranteeing you’ll have the same luck.
But the EX-G1 isn’t all brawn – it has a decent amount of smarts too. A 12.1-megapixel sensor does the hard work inside, with a 3x optical zoom range impressive for such a robust camera. It also shoots widescreen movies at 480p, storing it all on microSD card.
The EX-G1 is the first in what will be a series of Exilim G cameras, and its naming convention echoes that of Casio’s well-known G-Shock watches and the more recent G’zOne rugged phone.
Sadly, the EX-G1 has only been confirmed for the US market thus far, where it will go on sale next month for $299.
