Back to basics with new affordable Apple iMac

When it comes to all-in-one computers, few are more popular than the Apple iMac, and it’s easy to see why. With an excellent high-quality aluminium and glass design, and one of the most vibrant computer screens we’ve seen to date, the iMac really is a nice bit of kit. It seems like Apple could also be readying a cheaper version of the iMac as well – read on to find out more.

At present, the cheapest Apple iMac ships with a 1920×1080-pixel 21.5-inch screen, 4GB of memory, a 500GB hard drive and a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor. There’s also a powerful AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card under the shiny metal casing. Targeting the education market, a new cheaper iMac could be on the cards, and although it could retain the same 21.5-inch screen, the specs could differ quite a bit.

According to rumours, the affordable iMac could get a dual-core processor as standard, although at 3.1GHz, and with 2GB of DDR3 memory, it should be easily fast enough for most uses. The hard drive could also be slashed in capacity, with a 250GB HDD on the cards.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the affordable iMac – which could get a price tag as low as £800 – will be hitting the shops any time soon, going on sale to education customers only instead.

We’d like to know what you think though – would you buy a cheaper, lower spec Apple iMac? Or would you rather pay more, and get faster performance. Leave a comment and let us know.

Sadly enough i have little to no problems owning a mac except shedding out the cash for a spec computer that other pc's could have for half the price. I think macs look brilliant and are mostly v high spec - but the look a mac in my opinion isn't worth the other half of the money... I'd have no problem in buying a mac for a lower price (for lower specs) if it was a similar to the prices of the same spec'd pc.

I bought my imac just as the i processors were coming out, I waited and waited for my i7 and eventually settled for the 3.01Ghz dual core 2 but cranked up the RAM to 6Gb. Love the machine and would love my daughter to have one but dropping the spec down wouldn't be much of an issue as long as the processor itself is okay, look online for RAM and HDD and it's cheaper than what you'd pay for at Apple. Personal choice, I'd buy the cheaper spec and crank it up myself as and when I could.

800 quid is not cheap!!! You are better off getting a windows PC for a quarter of the price!
