Archos 5 Internet Tablet now official; we rejoice! The Archos 5 Internet Tablet: a pocket tablet with a touch of Android

To say that the Archos 5 Internet Tablet was one of the worst kept secrets is almost as much of an understatement as saying that people dislike bankers. Well, Archos has finally made the tablet official, and as expected, it’s a doozy!

One of the reasons we’ve been so excited by the Archos 5 Internet Tablet is the fact that it runs Android. But it’s also served up with a whole host of delicious specs on the side: up to 500GB of storage, GPS, Wi-Fi and a delicious 800×480 screen.

Android means the user experience is more simple than David Beckham and more smooth than George Clooney. There are three scrollable homescreens and they’re completely customisable. What’s more there’s Flash support for internet video.

As always Archos provides a rat of extras: from the HD Cinema plug-in, which plays back 720p video on a big screen hooked up to the tablet, to a DVR station, letting the Archos 5 Internet Tablet record live TV, or a GPS car holder to turn t into a satnav.

Prices start from £199.99 for the 8GB SSD flavour and it’s out later this month!

I am an archos fan having used their products for a number of years, I currently own the archos av 500 which I have been very happy with, The reason I haven't upgraded to a newer unit with all the bells and whistles and why I will hesitate to buy the tablet is because these newer units don't have an ir receiver built in as does my 500, when I go on holiday with the 500 all I need are the av cables to play out to a tv and I can use my remote control from the comfort of the hotel sofa. The newer units only enable you to do this if you lug around the docking station to anywhere you go which undermines the portability aspect.I'd be happy if the mini docks had this facility built in but they don.t.
