Apple unveils new iPods

Apple unveils new iPods The new iPod clan

Apple has unleashed what it reckons is the biggest update to its lineup ever, tweaking the touch, nano and shuffle. Each one has had a complete makeover, but its the new nano that’s really grabbed our attention.

Just as the rumour mill predicted, it drops the click wheel and now rocks a multitouch panel, letting you slip through music, photos and Nike + with a swipe of your digits. There’s now a clip round the back, so you can ditch those pesky armbands when you take it out running, and you can rotate the screen using your fingers so you can see what’s playing whichever way you hold it.

There are some downsides though: the new nano loses the ace camera and video playback skills of the last version. There are 8GB and 16GB models, costing £129 and £159 respectively.

The new shuffle reverts to an old-school design, bringing back the buttons that were so desperately missed on the last model. It keeps voice controls and the clip though and is now only £39.

But best of all, the new iPod touch is now even thinner. It crams in the same A4 chip and Retina Display as the iPhone 4, along with Game Centre, the new multiplayer gaming app which is looking to rival Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7. There’s also a camera round the back for video and regular snaps, as well as a front-facing camera for FaceTime. The new touch comes in 8GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, costing £189, £249 and £329. The iPod classic stays the same as ever, costing £193.

What do you think of the new iPod line up? Are you planning on getting one? Tell us what you think in the comments section now.

It has really annoyed me that apple has released this new iPod touch as it is too similar to the iPhone 4 that I paid £600 for :(

Agreed. The Ipod touch is now an IPhone 4 minus the contract. I'd be well 'miffed' if i'd just bought an IPhone 4 without a contract. I'm surprised to see Facetime on the Touch, especially the same day Vodafone splash the papers with an advert for it requiring 3G and WiFi - will Apple now remove the 3G requirements? How will you call a Touch user???? I disagree with Apple's assumption that the Touch is sold as the biggest hand held games console. Yes it plays games but It's misleading the announce most people bought a Touch to play games.

There are still some key differences between the Touch and the iPhone that make me glad I have the phone. One of which (though it may not be obvious) is the front facing camera on the Touch can shoot 720p video, but will only take 720p stills - not the 5 megapixel images that are so stunning on the iPhone

I think this is just another step in apples plan to get the ultimate gadget out, They are slowly combining their products (ipod-iphone, iphone-itouch, macbook-itouch) i think this unfortunate as much like many people i have just spent alot on my lovely new iphone and now realise it was a waste of money. I can get almost everything i want with the itouch and with the money left over buy a cheap phone. But being a apple fan i will no doubt end up having one of these in my back pocket beside my iphone so to apple i have only a one thing to say "well played, well played" Time to go and start saving for my next gadget

the new range is looking good but one thing that all the other commenters have forgot is the the iphone is a phone as well as an ipod touch hence the name that's quite a big difference so if your lokig for a phone get the iphone and if you want everything else the phone has get a touch that's basically why apple make touch so similar so people can show it off even though it's not a phone

How can you compare a iPhone to a iPod Touch? The iPhone is much better and to be honest I can't find much use to have a iPod Touch, it is like a bulky mobile that you cannot use as a mobile.

Instead of up dating the model why can't they increase the storage space I have a 160gb classic and still need more space to get just my music on, they could delevop this as well as new designs

@Gwydion01, the iPhone may well be better, but for those of us who want an music player (remember, iPod? how this whole thing started?), its pretty good - plays music/video/games, apps, camera, videocalls, etc, all without a lengthy and expensive phone contract, phones are dirt cheap as are o2 simplicity deals, rather have an iPod touch and a cheap phone 2bh.

I think the new Ipod touch is amazing compared to last year update to the ipod touch wish they could bring back the 16GB version again though. The camera does only take 720p photos though (about equivilent to 1 megapixel) But still the biggest update they've made to the ipod touch ever!

the ipod nano is not worth the money whilst the shuffle is ipod touch has gone 2 far apple just need to create a new touch design and stop using the iphone's idea the shuffle is so much more better now looks so cute. but nano gets scratched easily barely any apps no point photos and music just get a itouch. Apple=Annoying with IPOD TOUCH

i think the new ipod touch is kinda over priced. your like paying £300+ for a 64gb and £200+ for a 32gb

i do like the idea of the two camras on the ipod touch but its copying the dsi and the thing about the iphone 4 is that it just got some more gagits on i im left handed so its hard for me 2 use because the signel drops if i call someone. so i like the older one better.

I think what some people are missing is that this new ipod touch is not a great alternative to buying a iphone. With an iPhone you can text and talk to anyone else with a phone. However, although the new iPod Touch has the capability to use facetime, it is a very limited service. First of all you have to be in a wifi-spot, which in some cases can be hard like being in a car, second of all you need a friend that has spent loads of money on either the new iPhone or iPod, third of all the hardest boundary for you to overcome is that you need to communicate with your friend (which is very limited with just an ipod) that you want to talk and therefore making it so that you are both in a wifi spot, at the same time without the luxury of moving about because of the danger of loosing connection. It makes it very hard to just have a leisurely conversation at any time.
