Apple going 'back to the Mac'
Apple's typically cryptic press invite
Apple has sent out a surprise invitation to a press event for next Wednesday (October 20th), with all indications that we could be about to unleash a new version of Mac OS X.
That much is plain from the partially concealed image of a lion behind the familiar Apple logo, suggesting that the successor to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will be titled OS X 10.7 Lion.
Underneath the logo is the text “back to the Mac”, a clear reference that Apple is looking to concentrate some long-overdue attention to its computer department after a long period of focusing all-but-exclusively on the iPod, iPhone and iPad trio.
That means we could be looking at new MacBooks and iMacs – there will surely be some form of hardware to go with the unveiling of the new OS – if that is indeed what the invite is referring to.
In time-honoured Apple style, the company is saying nothing else that might give the game away for now. The big announcement will take place in San Francisco at 6pm UK time next Wednesday.

This will likely be a preview of OSX 10.7, with release of iLife and iWork updates and a new MacBook Air. The Lion is the king of the beasts, so possibly this will be the last of OSX as Apple moves to merge OSX and the iOS? I therefore expect more touch features in 10.7 as well as tighter integration with i-devices, with Lion to be available to consumers next summer. The next OS after that (probably 2014) will be a single OS combining best of OSX and iOS ... one OS to rule them all !!! ;-)
