Android beats iPhone in global sales

Android beats iPhone in global sales Android delivers iPhone smackdown

Android has overtaken iPhone as the best-selling OS for mobile handsets worldwide. The latest figures from analysts Gartner show that the Google-made OS has leapt to 17.2 per cent of global sales, while iPhone lagged with 14.2 per cent of the market.

The figures – measured for the second quarter of 2010 – show a massive boost for Android OS – it has positively scorched ahead from a 1.8 per cent share this time last year, while Apple’s iOS has grown – albeit my far lesser margins – from 13 per cent.

Apple shouldn’t be reaching for the bottle just yet, though, as these figures fail to take in iPhone 4 sales during this quarter, so the stats were only for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Symbian still remains top of the pile, although its share slipped from 51 per cent to a disappointing 41.2 – the Finnish phone giant is pinning its hopes on the success of its forthcoming N8. RIM still remain in the number two spot with 18.2 per cent thanks to its BlackBerry fanbase, but this position looks like the most hotly contested place with both Apple and Google so close behind.

What do you think? What phone do you have and why. And who do you think deserves the top spot? Have your say below…

Android was always going to outsell the iPhone - it is an OS that is shipped by loads of manufacturers on about a million different handsets (with a new 'best Android' out every month) - compared to the iPhone OS which is shipped by one manufacturer on what is basically one premium handset. This is no surprise at all - it is like the Mac vs PC. One is a tightly controlled integrated hardware and software offering and the other is an OS that can be installed by anyone on anything. This gives more choice and more sales but not necessarily more profits, and in my opinion an inferior product.

Being a Big Apple fanatic, this really has made me think about the future of this Mac Mobile OS. Every time i just look at my ipod (unfortunate to not own and iphone) i have that same *Tingling* Feeling deep down in my stomach as i did the first day i bought it. the sheer, beauty and Quality of this device can not be promoted in a Statistics. To me, the iPod/iPhone/iPad, is easily by far the Best Gadgets in the Universe- But this isn't entirely just down to the Software.

There is a lot of mobile phone espionage and industrial sabotage out there which we cannot imagine and which is lurking in silence somewhere. Jobs put design and out of this world technological concepts into our everyday world - the scroll wheel was a complete thing of wonder when I first used it on the iPod in the Apple store. Jobs has reinvented how we go to work. He'll invent a new way of wearing shoes. The spies can't even get close to his next move .. nor can I!
