Amazon UK: Kindle sales on fire
The UK Kindle - selling like hotcakes
For an awful long time the only way to get your hands on an Amazon Kindle e-reader in the UK was to buy the US version and have it shipped over – at considerable expense.
We complained long and hard – and we weren’t the only ones – but since Amazon finally saw sense in mid-year and gave the Kindle an official UK release, consumers have been putting their money where their mouth is.
Amazon UK has revealed that the Kindle is its number one selling product of all, and is unlikely to slip in the run-up to Christmas we’d warrant.
It’s a status the Kindle has already held in the US for quite some time, but establishing a similar dominance in the UK with supposed e-reader-killers like the iPad already on the prowl makes a strong positive statement of the e-book-loving gadget’s appeal.
The basic Wi-Fi-only Kindle – officially the third version of the device – costs £109 through Amazon, with a 3G-capable version going for £149. The UK Kindle store has nearly half a million titles for sale, with a further million or so free books available for download.
