Alex dual screen e-reader to run on Android
Spring Design's Alex is the first dual-screen e-reader we've seen.
You can’t say that all e-readers look the same – at least not now that Spring Design has shown off the Alex, its upcoming e-book shower-offer that comes packing not one but two screens: one 6-inch e-ink display and one 3.5-inch full colour LCD.
While the e-ink display handles your e-books, the LCD is for web browsing (there’s built-in 3G to keep you connected) and showing off multimedia files. There’s also an SD card slot, which lets you add storage space simply and cheaply.
The two screens can interact if needed though: if you find a long web-based article you want to read, you can switch it up onto the e-ink display to save battery power.
The Alex, which runs on Google’s Android mobile phone operating system, also features built-in speakers and a headphone socket. It will launch Stateside before the end of 2009, but there’s no confirmed UK date just yet. Hopefully that’ll change in the next few months.
