A whole new kind of rock music Rock on with the Klipsch AWR-650-SM

Okay, we know you have to do something a little bit different to stand out these days, but the AWR-650-SM – or the Rock Speaker, if you prefer – may be taking things a bit too far.

Somewhat surprisingly, this boulderesque creation isn’t made by some no-name manufacturer trying to get noticed, either. It’s the latest creation from respected US audio firm Klipsch.

Available in a granite or sandstone finish, the unit is designed to blend into its surroundings, with the rust-proof enclosure having been treated against those harmful UV rays. It’s wireless too – after all, a trial of wires snaking their way to the nether regions of your garden would give the game away.

Peek inside the Rock Speaker, however, and we’re back to far more familiar fare. Klipsch has crammed in a pair of 0.75in tweeters and a 5.25in subwoofer with dual voice coil. Output is a respectable 50W continuous with a 200W peak.

The only downside is that it only works together with Klipsch’s equally odd LightSpeakers – which combine a speaker and LED lamp in one unit that screws in just like a light bulb.

The Rock Speaker has gone on sale in the US for $199, with a Lightspeaker pack costing a not insignificant $599. No details yet on a European distributor.
