52in glasses-free 3D TV hits Japan
All the 3D you can eat, and you don't need the shades either
Some people reckon the notion that Japan gets all the coolest tech first is a bit of a cliche, but checking out this baby, we’re not so sure.
You may not have heard of Nissho Electronics, and probably won’t remember the model name BDL5231-3D2R, but when you’re sitting down in front of the world’s biggest glasses-free 3D TV ever to go on sale, does any of that matter.
This larger-than-life 3D telly measures a full 52 inches across, and needless to say is full HD too, with a 60Hz refresh rate, 2000:1 contrast ratio, 700cd/sqm brightness and an 8ms response time.
We haven’t been told too much about the 3D wizardry that’s made such a big-screen specs-free panel possible, only that it’s been supplied by Dutch firm Venture Dimenco Displays, which was set up by four former Philips employees.
So good news all round, then? Not quite. First of all, this is one TV we’re pretty sure won’t be heading to the UK, and secondly, even our lucky Japanese friends are being hit by a price tag north of £13,000 to get their hands on this oversized 3D screen.

Is it me, or does a contrast ratio of 2000:1 seem a bit naff? Are there some 000's missing from that figure or does a 52" 3D screen not need a high ratio?

Yeah, it does seem quite low... especially considering i have a 3 year old non-3D lcd tv and its contrast ratio is 50,000:1 (and that's not even great any more, hoping to change soon). Most plasma screens today have around a 5000,000:1 contrast ratios.
