Whacky racer!
What would happen if you took out all of the amazingly technical kit that you find in today’s modern cars? We’re talking about the extraordinary amount of tech that makes them super-safe and extraordinarily easy to drive. I employ the skills of comedian and writer Danny Wallace, a £100,000 Audi R8 supercar and an empty race track to find out.
The Audi R8 has more hi-tech widgetry than Doctor Who. The electronic stability and traction controls automatically monitor how the wheels grip the road. If any start to spin or skid, power is automatically reduced until the wheels grip again and the driver regains control. It also has ABS – antilock braking system – which detects if the car is skidding and then controls it by reapplying the brakes by up to 15 times per second.
Danny got to use all the motoring tech for a couple of laps. But what happens when all the driver aids are switched off on the car? After getting the help of a couple of Audi engineers and permission from Audi HQ in Germany we disabled the electronic stability control, traction control and the ABS. All off.
Find out if Danny could control the Audi R8 without any tech aids in the video above!
