Vote: World of Warcraft v Counter-Strike
Jon Bentley is here again pulling his best Simon Cowell impression as he sizes up two more offerings trying to make their way onto the hallowed Wall of Fame. This week it’s Suzi against Jason again as they promote the most iconic online multiplayer game: World of Warcraft or CounterStrike?
Counter-Strike came about in the late 90s and was the first game to bring online multiplayer to the masses. The first-person shooter was an instant success and went on to sell millions of copies. Its popularity is down to its simplicity and addictive gameplay – join either terrorists or counter-terrorists then both teams set about to achieve their mission by taking down the opposition. Ten years on it’s still at the top with pro leagues and teams all around. How can it not get on the Wall of Fame?
Maybe because World of Warcraft is also vying for the place. With millions of players all around the world, World of Warcraft has become a way of life to its public. Blizzard wanted to create an open, free-roaming environment. Unleashed in November 2004, it was the fastest-selling online game in history, selling 240,000 games on its opening day. It now has over 11 million subscriberes. It’s even had a South Park episode dedicated to it!

Pah! World of Warcraft may be the biggest selling online game... But it makes people obsessed. So obsessed that it ruins relationships and makes the people playing FORGET their children.

totally disagree with this weeks result the interface with wow is very difficult personally i couldn't get into it and put it down after a week whilst i still play on cs to this day.

out of the 2 counter-strike is better, but if i had to choose out of all the games that are multi player... then eve on-line beats everything hands down in my opinion

counter-strike was made by two people how love the gaming world and wanted to make a great game and used one of the (what I thinks is the best) best gaming engines. But world of warcraft, was made by a company to expand there profits. Its a cult that sucks the life out of people, and your money, all they did was make a large map. counter strike is far far cheaper, easy and fun.

After watching the gadget show on monday night, I must disagree with thier decision. At the time I am writing this, Counter Strike (CSS) is winning the vote (65%). I am a vivid player of css, being in a fun clan/community, and I have been in it since it started. I think Css has better gameplay, is more customizeable (making maps was not mentioned, neither was skins), with (I think) more custom maps than normal maps. This is why I am in a community, with jail mod (terrorists get no weapons, counter terrorists order people around), and fun maps, which go from challenge maps, to very silly maps, including zombie disco. In world of warcraft, it costs money per month, which puts me off completely. There are some elements that I also have problems with, but (exuse the advertising) Guild Wars (£20 forever) and Cabal online (free) are very good choices, and these could easliy challenge world of Warcraft in every catagory.

How can WoW not be on the wall of fame, it isn't just a game it's a way of life. The only downside to this game is that it is so adictive it consumes your life.

I think that it is very close, but counter strike deserved to win because all the REALLY good games are one off payments, and thats it, if blizzard changed it so mabye you only subscribed if you wanted to get past say, level 50 or somthing like that, but only if they where reosanable with it, so its not the first 5 levels are one off payment, so you had the whole game for the one off payment, and you got the perks that you dont need to pay the game but would be better off with, and thats my opinion...

CS:S is pretty good, and definitely the better of the 2 choices, however, the true daddy of online multiplayer gaming (quake 3) should have been there to be honest, yes the lesser gamers may hate it because we are useless at it, but it had a far greater influence on the genre than CS:S

rubbish decision wow is boring does involve the slitest gaming skill as someone else say it does actually ruin peoples lives. counter strike is amazingly good, its addictive and fun an is genrally perfect, also why was none of the great mods mensioned for counterstrike. counter strike should have been the clear winner!!

Well for me its wow, i have played both games, starting cs first back in the 3.1 days (mansion best map), i even ran a clan of my own with my best mate, it was great for awhile, but soon after each 3 min round, of start shoot kill or die, start shoot kill or die, again and again , its a bit repetative and the amount of bickering from the kids claiming your wallhacking, aimbotting, bunny hoppying, omg shut up and go to bed! wasnt my fault my G3 kicked ur usp's rear posture. then came wow, a game where there are more characters with very different styles to play, loads of game area of different types of terrain to explore, and the added bonus of being able to play head to head against the other faction(team) or just play the storyline, a game with more possibilites with something different to do everyday. well worth the £8 a month subscription, u pay for what u get, one off payment of repetative CS or £8 a month of rich content wow.

Hi i come from a family that is very big on computer gaming online, i my self have been playing CS for years and its a very good game, But i also have been playing wow since the 2nd week it came out in england, the 2 games are nothin of the same ! World of warcraft is the better of the 2 games you get to see you character develop and gain levels and do quest, it also has the best community of the 2. counter strike has only ever had crap upgrade from 1.6 to Zondition zero to counter strike source, and to this date 90% of the Counter strike playes still play 1.6 World of warcraft Expansions are upgrades gaining higer levels new achievements and quests and new dungeons This is why world of warcraft is the CLEAR winner when it comes to these 2 games head to head

Such a poor choice! Nobody wants to pay for a game, pay for internet, pay for electricity and then pay monthly again for the games itself! And then have to pay more for add ons... Blizzard are just so greedy in this respect.

i agree that this is a correct result WOW wins hands down, and all this about it CONSUMING your life maybee true but if those people wasnt on wow they would be addicted by a differend game like guild wars or runescape, i play wow as much as i play other games, i would recommend world of warcraft for anybody who 'know thier limits' , do this and you will be enjoying the best game in mmorpg history!!!

I love the Gadget Show, but I have to say, the feature about 'on line' printing made me laugh my head off. ..... A five day wait for the prints to be delivered? ...... What? Try a roll of film,.. you can take the exposed roll to any photo lab and have set of prints, a sheet of negatives and a CD ready for collection in an hour. It would be more useful to check the quality of theses labs

And another thing, what was that report on 'gigapan' all about? This is one of most exciting digital imaging systems ever. What did we get? "oh, look, we can read that sign on the wall". When in fact, on the web site for this gadget, there are the most amazing examples of what it can achieve. A stadium full of people and it is possible to clearly recognise thousands and thousands of individual faces. Truly astounding,...... but, all we get is a measly demonstration of how it is capable of reading a certificate that has been stuck on the studio wall...... Not too impressed with that one guys.

I never liked either much. If it had to be one or the other it will be Counter-Strike seeing as it is a FPS and takes more skill than a MMO. WoW is hated by me, anything this addictive, with so many deaths should be banned, watch the raging begin :P

Completely different games. Bang out of order even trying to compare them. Both revolutionized their own genres of PC gaming and deserve to be neck and neck. So few that comment seem to actually have played both. Why comment if you have not played both for at least a fair amount of time? You really don't have a clue unless you do this.

I never played World of Warcraft but I can say that it could not be that good, as compared to Counter Strike. The thing is, Counter Strike lost my gameplay interest due to the hacks which are continuously being used for a few years. And the Anti-Cheat requirement sucks because the software won't work. Therefore, wait for the Counter Strike: Global Offensive, it will decide who is gonna win this time.

It's obvious that the gadget show team made the right choice. I mean yeah sure counter strike looks good but call of duty has got a more advanced way of doing that sort of thing. World of warcraft has TWELVE milion subscribers and it is clear that the gadget show team made the right choice here.
