Vote: Wii v Atari

Tuesday 04 August

Who gets your vote for Wall of Fame induction? Nintendo Wii or Atari 2600

It’s back! The Wall of Fame proved such a hit last time out that we’ve brought it back for another season. The home of the finest, most highly acclaimed and important gadgets of their time, it houses the likes of the Segway, iPod, Scalextric. And this week, we’re looking at games consoles: the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Wii.

First up, the Godfather of gaming consles: Atari 2600. The videogame creators of Pong wanted to create a home console, and after £13 million in development it was finally launched in 1977. With awesome games such as Combat, Space Invaders and Frogger, it achieved world dominance selling 30 million consoles with over 900 games available!

The Nintendo Wii, however, has arguably opened up the gaming world to absolutely everyone. Forget your PS3 and Xbox 360’s powerful processing. This is all about control via real-life gestures and movements thanks to the innovative Wiimote. There are now more Nintendos in UK households than any other games consoles.

Want to find out Judge Jon Bentley’s verdict? Check out the video above. Want to have your say? Check out the poll below. There can be only one winner…

Oh John, The 2600 led the way for the games of today. I can remember getting my first Atari back in 1980. Man the games are just as playable today as they were back in the day, plus who needs more than one fire button on a joystick!!

Has to be the Atari 2600 all the way, where it all began. I remember as a boy playing on one in the local electrical store for hours. Was it me though or were those joysticks really stiff and didn't feel like they moved?? Ron..

Guys, how can you give this to the Wii? The Atari 2600 (aka VCS) lead the way with video games entering the home - bear in mind that this predateded home computers so it was the only way to get access to games in the comfort of your own home. I remember the joysticks with nostalgia - despite looking pretty rugged, I did manage to go through them fairly easily.

The Atari is a clear winner for the hall of fame; all the Wii brought was a game system for non gamers, sure it has a few entertaining games but it's like making a car for non drivers.

Unfortunately i think that John forgets that this is a wall of fame; gadgets that make it onto this should have been around for a long time to prove themselves, like the Atari 2600 has. It led the way for every other console. Yes the Wii has revolutionized the way in which games are played, but it hasn't been around for that long and so in my opinion, cannot go on the wall of fame.

Oh man, the Atari sooo deserves to be up here. The first home video games console was the Magnavox Odyssey (in the US), or Phillips' Videopac in Europe. Image: http://neatorama.cachefly.net/images/2008-05/magnavox-odyssey.jpg But the Atari was superbly succesful. It really should be on that humble wall.

Already posted about this but in the wrong place (Doh!) Anyways, 2600 all the way. Why - the cartridge was a revolution. It had some of the most memorable and classic games out there (as opposed to Mario Karts and...er...) My gran could set it up and use it and, whats more, I still play it now when I get a chance. I genuinely got bored of the Wii very quickly, along with just about everyone else I know. Apart from the quirky and unreliable controllers it is nothing like as revolutionary. It may have potential but it hasn't earned its stripes by a long way. Come on Gadget Show peeps, do the right thing.

Oh dear, John has really lost the plot. Has he not seen the great fall from grace the Wii has recently experienced. I still remember the day I got my Atari (shame I had to share it with my brothers). We played it until the joysticks stopped working; before getting more joysticks and playing some more until they died too. Contrast that with the Wii; as soon as the novelty wears off and the frustration with trying to consistently control it takes over, it simply sits there gathering dust. A poor decision without a doubt!

Got to go with the Wii. It has really brought mass market appeal. Always good to get the misus involved in gaming and without the wii - that wouldn't have happened.

Guys, what are you thinking? The 2600 should have won the only reason grannies play the wii now is that they were weened on the 2600 all those years ago. The 2600 was a revolution, the wii is just an evolution and standing on the shoulder of a giant. Give this one a rethink.

The Wii quickly looses it's appeal and becomes nothing more than a dust magnet. The controls get boring and frustrating and at the end of the day gamers would rather hold a pad. The games on the Wii are nothing compared to those available for the other major consoles and the Atari was the best of it's time. As a toy the wii is great, not as a games console.

Come on John... You know the Atari should be on the wall. It was the first affordable home game console ever. Can't see why people get so hook up with Wii, is it because they like exercises? Why pay £40 for a hula hoop game when a hula hoop (in the real world) only cost a fiver and doesn't use any electricity? People with a Wii always say “even my mom loved to play on it”. Well, isn't it time to start thinking about the safety hazard for older people on that balance pad or those flying remote controls?

The Nintendo Wii was a ridiculous choice. It is the Harry Potter of gaming consoles. Yes it opened the games industry up to a much larger community, but it cannot fight against one of the original consoles and does not have the same draw to core-gamers as it does to the general public. Nintendo have even had to release the Wii MotionPlus in order to bring the accuracy of the WiiMote up to the original level that they had promised. This is the type of console that has an excelent novelty selling point, something which will sell with record results - but has a good chance of gaining dust in the household once consumers tire of the arm-waving and realise that few high quality games make it to the system compared to the other industry contender. I understand however that in terms of th eGadget Shows popularity, the Nintendo Wii was really the only option for them, in order to keep viewing figures the show has to pick the gadget most popular among the public today - and it would be safe to assume that more viewers will have had some experience or a greater knowledge about the Wii, than about the Atari.

Sorry Jon, but you're wrong! The Atari brought families together (even the extended family) even more that the Wii. The Wii is great for making games a physical experience, but let’s be truthful, the controller isn’t all it’s cracked up to be...at best it’s vague! For the first time, we had the opportunity with the Atari to play arcade games in our living rooms!

Oh dear, you got this so wrong. Its easily the Atari 2600. If it wasn't for this machine pioneering the way the Wii and PS3's of this world wouldn't be under our tv's now. And all this before home PCs became the norm. Fair enough the Wii has brought it to the family, but its starting to show that its the 5 minute trick pony that people thought it would become. Only 4 months left before it gets dusted off and used for a quick game of tennis with nan before the christmas turkey, and then put away for another 12months.

Atari 2600 for me and my family. The Atari 2600 not only gave birth to the video console scene but having games SO simple to play, it also enabled people of all ages to play. The Atari 2600 was not only the first and most important console ever made, it got the family playing games together with classic simple bat and ball style games. The stuff my mother, father and even grandfather enjoyed playing!. Other later consoles actually lost some of this charm and more violent single player games became the norm. Nobody was scared of a single button controller!. Complexity wasn't an issue. The wii may be huge but its also new and benefiting from a form of entertainment which has been growing for 30 years. Every generation new records are set in sales, why? because the industry keeps on growing. If it wasn't for the iconic and hugely successful 2600 there would be no wii.

i dont believe wii should even stand a chance against the atari let alone win, a timeless classic like atari should not have pitted against a console like wii. atari paved the way for cartridge gaming and without it the industry would have been lost leaving no hope for disc reading consoles or motion sensitive controllers, if i had the offer i would gladly swap my wii for the atari without a second thought, like i said earlier TIMELESS CLASSIC, enough said...........

The argument for the Wii doesn't even hold muster, if we want to discuss the medium which brought gaming to the masses surely we've got to consider the Playstation 2 and Nintendo's own DS. These systems pre-date the Wii and achieved the same, if not greater, level of popularity in an equally wide spectrum of demographics. All the Wii has really done is change the method through which we play our games, and arguably limited the genres' which can be successful on the platform. Beyond Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario, Zelda ... essentially all first party Nintendo games, what do consumers actually play on the Wii which is so different? If we take into consideration the amount of time spent on these machines, or the attach rate of software outside of hardware bundles I doubt the Wii would fare so well. It's not a hit with the hardcore gaming crowd, and it's simply retreading the road the PS2 and NDS laid out for it in terms of mass market 'non gamers'. The Atari brought gaming into the home, for that it is a legend. The Playstation 2 broke numerous sales records, brought an affordable DVD system with state of the art gaming to the home, for these reasons it is a legend. The Nintendo DS is dominating the portable market to the same extent Sony did the home consoles with the PS2, it's 6 years old and still king, truly appealing to the mass market like no other games machine before it. The Nintendo Wii is insanely popular ...but while the PS2 smashed everything that came before it, the Wii is simply on par with what the PS2 did before it. It is not breaking new ground outside of the motion controls and will probably only be remembered in the industry for ending Sony's decade long dominance. If anything had a shot against the Atari it would have been the Playstation 2, not the Wii in my humble opinion.

Atari 2600 has to win this. The Wii is a toy not a gaming console. How many of the new casual market actually become gamers? I think the problem with this is that the general public see the Wii as a mesiah but don't actually know anything about the gaming industry (sorry but I think the same goes for Jon). They will defend it/ vote for it because it is all they know. Knowledge is the key to this vote as such the Atari 2600 should win.

Its seems that John is too easily swayed by the "latest" gadget in these wall competitions... Without the Atari the Wii would not have existed!! (The Wii (if anything) is a backward step in "video games" as it has nowhere to go. Motion sensor gaming without physical feedback is never as immersive as proper "old school" gaming. but that's a different story). As for the "It brings families together" quote, the reason that more families are playing is because the people who started on the Atari now have their own families and are ACTUALLY inerested in gaming and computer literate. Also directly comparing sales figures from different eras is not a fair comparison. People spend a lot more on gadgets today then they did in the 70s-80s when the Atari was out.

I can't believe Jon went for the Wii over the 2600 VCS. Are you insane man? The Atari was what got most of us 'mature' gamers started in the first place. Being able to play Space Invaders, Asteroids and the like in your own home was like a dream come true. The Wii is just a Gamecube with a motion controller. Yeah its very easy for the whole family to use but to be honest, it gets dull quickly. I say we all go down to the studio and remove the Wii from the wall. Long live the VCS!

Jon is very very wrong. The Wii doesn't just not deserve to defeat the mighty Atari 2600, but Jon said it "revolutionised" gaming It really hasn't. It's casualised it and defeated the object of what gaming was all about. The original object of games was to relax and pass the time. You can't relax by jumping about like a lunatic or waving your arms around like some demented clock. It's not right. =\

The Atari is nostalgic and it started the console revolution but did your parents or grandparents play on it and love it? The Wii is for everyone and absolutely deserves the legend status. I used to enjoy the Atari but not as much as I love playing the Wii with my kids and my parents and nan.

Play the ashes on any console and then play it on the Wii. Wii games me and the kids play are still just as good a year and a half later of playing. Fair enough not every day but there is no way I still play any game from the Xbox or PS even 6 months later. It is all about having fun with the whole family and especially with the kids. We still have a right laugh still playing Mario Kart Racing. The kids still can't beat me but they're certainly catching up. : ) The Atari brings back good memories but only of me and my brother having fun on it like any game your parents would have a go but soon get bored and not really join in the proper fun of it.

Never played the Atari but I have played the Wii, sure its fun at first but once you get over the novelty of waving your arms around and seeing your movement imitated on the screen, its boring. You just have to look at the X-box 360 or PS3 and and realise that you've chosen the wrong console. The Atari is the console for gamers, don't know why the Wii was chosen but its just for 'casual' gamers who can't spot a proper game if they were sitting on it. The Atari is the father of all good modern game consoles.

The Wii is too young to go on the wall of fame, it's like giving someone a life time achievement award at the age of 23! The Atari 2600 was a brilliant console, not only was it brilliant for its time, I still remember the games as being utter genius, if it wasn't broken I would take it out of my cupboard and play it right now. However I will nail it to my wall as the true choice of the wall of fame, SO THERE!

Yes the Atari 2600 led the way for home consoles, but only for people who wanted to play games in the first place (a fairly narrow audience back then)! Did it really do anything else except be the first on the scene? The Wii has got people playing who would refuse to contemplate video games before hand! Just this weekend I spent the day at a friend's (who is definitely in the non gamer camp) and spent a good few hours of Wii Sports Resort (the Wii belonged to her boyfriend) playing 7 other people, one of whom was her dad but also with her disabled brother (who was able to participate due to the motion based controls) plus my friend (non gamer) and a few other people. It was excellent fun, but no way would we have all sat round an Atari 2600 and been able to enjoy a similar experience (of the 8 who played I'd say only half would touch the Atari). Even my mum has a Wii and uses the Wii fit, and now's she got herself a DS! The Wii is bringing gaming to a whole new audience of people like no other console has and for that I think John got his decision spot on.

sure the wii is amazing if your a child or a women, but as a games machine, it simply leaves you wanting, its a fad that so far as hooked into a women's desire to slim down and make it look like by swinging a remote, healthy. The last proper nintendo console was the n64. The Wii has pushed back gaming to age of kids only and to put it up on a wall of fame when its only a few years old, beggars belief. The atari 2600 is what started it all, without it, nintendo wouldn't have made a console, sega wouldn't have, and so on. Actually lets from this point forward not use the word console and Wii in the same sentence, it isn't.

i have played on the Wii its cheap graphics let down the revolutionary system that better consoles like the 360 with natal and dare i say the ps3 with its little glowing stick, the Wii itself is cheap because its a bland console which you have to buy things for it the new motion board, the gun, steering wheel and the motion+ making what it was meant to be three years after they said it should be that good. And to say how valueable it is to bring the family together is only if you like racing a fat italian plumber or trying to get a many hula hoops as you can when you can go outside to a leisure center and play tennis there because its real making the Wii stereotype of how lazy gamers are than what it is with the other consoles making it clear that the atari should have won and on monday jason can put the rightfull winner on the wall of fame tainted by the stain of the Wii in which he can put in a shredder because 99.9% of people say that the atari is better console and john is making stupid decisions and should pick the correct one and change it on the next show

Atari wins for me, absolutely no contest. I think the reason Mr Bentley gave it to the Wii was simply down to the gimmick of wireless motion sensing game play, which lets face it, is not that accurate. I grew up up with the first mass production games like PONG, Space Invaders and Pac-Man and I've been totally hooked ever since. The controls couldn't get any simpler, it appealed to so many people of all ages and at the time was revolutionary, I mean it brought arcade games to your living room for heavens sake. I've got all the next gen consoles and my favourite is the xbox360, the ps3 is just used for playing Blu-ray movies (about all it's good for), and the Wii is something that gets switched on at Christmas and no other time of year (waste of money really). There are certain things that get invented, that influence history and shape they way we live our lives, big things like Television, Radio, Telephone, the Internet and in my opinion I think the Atari 2600 games console is right up there with them. Now you can't say the same for the Wii can you!!!

Oh so wrong. The 2600 was the daddy of them all. So what if it didn't have cute childish graphics and a controller you could wave about. It started all of this. I demand a re-count!

As the votes on this page show, the decision to put the Wii above the Atari was totally WRONG! Don't get me wrong. I love my Nintendo Wii. HOWEVER, there is no doubt that the impact of the Atari was far greater. It was so incredibly sought after and a true ground-breaker. OK, the Wii has family appeal and a novel interface. It pails into insignificance when I remember the impact of the Atari. They were the pioneers, the true and original. We need a reverse decision on the wall of fame!!!!

The wii is all about the gaming controller, the console itself is substandard, so it cannot win this one!

Sorry what is the Wii, Atari 2600 will be around long after the Wii has been forgotten. Space invaders, Asteroids, Tank Command Pitfall, Empire strikes and Back Pack man???. I remember doing a full 24hrs stint on Asteroids and clocking the score on it. I have never done that since Sorry Wii you are the Weakest Link and do not belong on the Board. :)
