The problem for me is that whilst Mario was defiantly subject to better game design as far as the actual characters are concerned Sonic quite literally pulls ahead with all members of the franchise showing real character progression and emotion unlike in Mario where character defining moments are few and far between.
It is unfortunate that the question of the better character or franchising was decided on the nature of the platforming game play.
