Those 3D glasses aren't going anywhere
Keep those 3D glasses - you'll be needing them
We’ve had both Toshiba and Sharp proudly showing off glasses-free 3D TV prototypes in recent weeks, but according to another electronics giant – Samsung – we shouldn’t get our hopes up of seeing any kind of mainstream penetration for five to ten years.
Few would argue that 3D film and television would have come a lot further by now if the glasses weren’t a compulsory sidekick. And even though today’s sleek electronic jobs are a far cry with the frankly embarrassing two-colour cardboard jobs of days gone by, there’s still a stigma attached.
And, says Samsung, it’s a stigma we’re just going to have to put up with for a few more years.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung bigwig BK Yoon said that while glasses-free 3D tech was relatively straightforward to implement on small-screen devices such as the Nintendo 3DS console – out next year – it was a far greater challenge getting it right on 3D TVs.
And those technical challenges – says Yoon – will keep the cost of glasses-free 3D TVs beyond the reach of ordinary households for at least five years.
Samsung no doubt will claim that it will be leading the specs-less charge – whenever it happens – but we’d certainly be interested to hear Toshiba and Sharp’s thoughts on the matter.

Ironically it will be 5 ot 10 years before there is enough 3D content to justify watching it.

And 3D will have gone a different way by then, surely the important factor is whether OLED Tv or UHDTV gets going in the next few years, if it does then we can tack on another 5 years to the 3D roadmap and not worry about glasses tech that the Gadget show took an absolute age to tell us about. Sometimes I think a conversation with me is a more informative show that you Gadgeteers.

My mum has just brought a 3d tv and i think that it is worth it because our tv converts things that we plug in into 3d.

I really think we should take a step back at the moment, until the technology is up to scratch. About 10 years ago we were told to scrap our 4:3 tv's and invest in widescreen. A few years after that we were told to scrap our far superior crt's to buy flat screens. a couple of years after that it was HD ready tv's. then very shortly after that it was now FULL HD tv. Now, we are here....and 3D tv's are the ones to replace our tv's with. but as we can see company's are saying that 3d tv's will also be superseded spectacle free ones! come on.......give us ALL a break!!!
