The Tablet war heats up
At the start of the week we saw leaked documents on the capabilities of the new dual-screen “digital journal”, the Microsoft Courier and today we’ve learned more about the Dell Mini 5, now codenamed the Dell Streak.
So it now seems that we have the first suite of new Slate heroes – the Apple iPad, the Windows-powered Courier and the Android-totting Dell Streak. While the iPad is the only one that’s official at this stage, I predict that this year will see the market for these new ultra-portable touchscreen devices really heat up with many more manufacturers joining the fray.
Thanks to cloud computing, better processors and changing needs, more people are looking for an ultra-portable digital hub rather than a fully-fledged laptop. A device to check emails, social network, watch the odd movie and generally stay connected.
Will you go Slate/Tablet this year? And what flavour will you choose if you do? Let us know in the comments section below…

I don't think I will be getting one Jon. They are undeniably very desirable items but their application is too limited. You could never do work on one. £350-400 is an awful lot to spend on something to keep on the coffee table so you can read emails while watching the telly. I bet Jason can't wait for the APPLE iPad (yPad?) though.

I'm fortunate enough to be going to the US on Easter Sunday the day after iPad launch, but I still can't bring myself to buy one. We don't have the WiFi here to make it usable. If I lived in Downtown LA where the Wifi coverage is better than the 3G coverage then it might be worth my while. The cost of a 3G version over here looks to be extortionate. Even if they adjusted for exchange rates and priced at £350 and £15 a month and launched the international bookstore, it still wouldn't be value for money. Bring out a second generation next year with Flash, camera and more storage in a basic model and it might interest me.

I use a tablet pc everyday and have done so for the last 5 or 6 years. I think they are so much more convenient for browsing the web, ebook reading and scibbling notes, especially when on the move. The need to sit down, open up a laptop and type with both hands whenever a thought strikes me just isn't practical for me. I may get a new tablet this year as my current ones are getting on a bit. But I won't be getting an iPad as that is just an oversized iPhone/iPod.
